Activity 2. Read the text and fill in the gap
Focus: reading for specific clues
Skills: scanning, reading for gist
Level: Upper-Intermediate
The last part of the book.
XI. - I used to think there was nothing I couldn't give up for Richard. Could I give up this? If I had to choose between losing Richard and losing this? (I suppose it would be generally considered that I had lost Richard.) If I had had to choose seven years ago, before I knew, I'd have chosen Richard; I couldn't have helped myself. But if I had to choose now knowing what reality is between losing Richard in the way I have lost him and losing reality, absolutely and for ever, my real self, knowing that I'd lost it? If there's anything in it at all, losing my real self would be losing Richard, losing Richard's real self absolutely and for ever. Knowing reality is knowing that you can't lose it. That or nothing.
XII - Supposing there isn't anything in it? Supposing Last night I began thinking about it again. I stripped my soul; I opened all the windows and let my ice-cold thoughts in on the poor thing; it stood shivering between certainty and uncertainty. I tried to doubt away this ultimate passion, and it turned my doubt into its own exquisite sting, the very thrill of the adventure. Supposing there's nothing in it, nothing at all? That's the risk you take.
XII - There isn't any risk. This time it was clear, clear as the black pattern the sycamore makes on the sky. If it never came again I should remember.

To further explain circular narrative structure is able to create a sense of completeness and closure. This technique can be a powerful tool for English classes, as it encourages students to think critically about the structure of a story and its impact on the reader. Here are some other ways to implement the circular narrative structure in English classes:
1. Analyzing examples of circular narratives: Encourage students to identify the beginning and ending of the story, and to discuss how the circular structure impacts their understanding of the story.
2. Plan a circular narrative: Ask students to plan and write their own circular narrative. Encourage them to think about how they want their story to end and to consider how they can bring the story back to the beginning. Ask students to consider how the circular structure affects their emotional reaction, understanding of character development, and overall impression of the story.
3. Application of circular narrative structure in writing. While reading novel encourage students to start realizing and contextualizing words as well as use of punctuation in the context which helps them to use definite words in the writing. Also, students improve writing in a different way, meaning they embark on writing with proper use of cohesive devices and most importantly in an accurate sequence.
4. Connect narrative structure to other literary techniques: Encourage students to make connections between circular narrative structure and other literary techniques such as symbolism, metaphor, and foreshadowing. They have to identify how these techniques contribute to the overall story structure. By implementing circular narrative structure in English classes, you can help students develop a deeper understanding of the power of storytelling and the ways that narrative structure impacts the reader's experience.
