David  Atchison  has  a  Research  Fellow  position  to  determine  how  peripheral  vision  is  



affected  by  its  optical  limitations  and  how  these  can  be  reduced.  This  position  is  

supported  by  an  Australian  Research  grant  to  David  Atchison  and  Andrew  Lambert  from  

the  School  of  Engineering  at  the  University  of  New  South  Wales.  The  Research  Fellow

Duty  Statement  



•  Purpose  of  Position  

The  appointee  will  work  with  Professor  David  Atchison  on  an  Australian  Research  

Council  position  investigating  optically  imposed  limits  on  peripheral  visual  performance  

and  the  effects  of  reducing  these  limitations  on  visual  performance.  The  appointee  is  

required  to  have  a  PhD  in  Physics,  Engineering  or  Visual  Optics.

This  position  holds  membership  with  QUT’s  largest  interdisciplinary  research  institute,  

the  Institute  of  Health  and  Biomedical  Innovation  (IHBI).  The  position  involves  

collaboration  with  the  School  of  Engineering,  University  of  New  South  Wales.  Further

Duties  include:  

•  Design  and  build  optical  systems  to  measure  peripheral  optical  defects  of  the  eye  and  

visual  performance,  including  the  development  of  an  adaptive  optics  system.  

•  Design,  develop  and  manage  the  collection,  collation  and  storage  of  experimental  data  

under  the  direction  of  the  research  supervisor.  

•  Recruit  and  screen  subjects  for  experiments.  

•  Cooperate  with  other  members  of  the  research  team.  

•  Prepare  and  publish  research  outcomes  in  relevant  referred  international  journals  and  

present  research  at  seminars  and  conferences.  

•  Be  accountable  for  complying  with  health  and  safety  policies,  procedures,  hazard  

reporting  and  safe  work  practices.  

 

Selection  Criteria  



Essential:  

 

1.  Completion  of  a  PhD  in  Physics,  Engineering  or  Visual  Optics.  



2.  Experience  in  the  field  of  optics  and  imaging  analysis,  particularly  in  the  application  of  

adaptive  optics.  

3.  Demonstrated  experiences  in  the  conduct  of  research  with  published  outcomes.  

4.  Proficiency  in  computer  programming,  such  as  use  of  Matlab  and/or  C,  combined  

with  demonstrated  experience  in  the  use  of  computer  and  statistical  software.  

5.  Demonstrated  ability  to  work  collaboratively  in  research  teams  and  the  ability  to  work  

independently.  

 

Desirable:  



1.  Experience  in  conducting  vision  research  experiments.  

2.  Experience  in  using  CASAO  and  HASEO  software  in  adaptive  optics  applications.
