Heat Content of a Quantity of Fuel, Net: The amount of usable heat energy released when a fuel is
burned under conditions similar to those in which it is normally used. Also
referred to as the lower
heating value. Btu conversion factors typically used in EIA represent gross heat content.
Heavy Oil: The fuel oils remaining after the lighter oils have been distilled off during the refining
process. Except for start-up
and flame stabilization, virtually all petroleum used in steam-electric
power plants is heavy oil.
Hydroelectric Power: The production of electricity from the kinetic energy of falling water.
Hydroelectric Power Plant: A plant in which the turbine generators are driven by falling water.
Imports: Receipts of goods into the 50 States and the District of Columbia from U.S.
possessions and
territories or from any foreign country.
