Case study Presently, vocabulary teaching gets more attention. Teaching vocabulary becomes one of the most discussed topics in teaching English as a foreign language since it is crucial. English teachers have devoted much time to teach vocabulary but they got unsatisfying results. Vocabulary teaching should also not be delayed though students have not mastered grammar. Thus, there is a need to teach vocabulary in order to supports students' language acquisition. Yet, when it comes to teaching and learning processes, teachers would likely encounter problems from students, themselves, or even other factors. Mis Gulhayo noticed that almost most of the students had a problem with vocabulary memorization. She became aware of the students are not interested in learning vocabulary and some of the students feel demotivated in the learning .This may happen when the activities designed in teaching vocabulary are not interesting to students. Moreover, environment where they practice the words sometimes does not support their vocabulary development. And Mis Gulhayo started looking for a solution. He wanted to find a way so that, as a result, children would be very interested in memorizing vocabulary. He planned an experiment between the two classes. Fifth graders were selected for this experiment. The condition of the experiment on teaching vocabulary between students of 5"A" and 5"B" classes was that one of the classes was taught vocabulary through computer games, and the other was taught by traditional method. "B" class was more inactive in lessons than "A" class, therefore, Mis Gulhayo chose the " B" class for a new method in order to know the result exactly.During the lesson, the teacher used various online games, quizzes, tests. At the end of the 1- month experiment proccess, Mis Gulhayo began to see a very noticeable change in class B. The students were looking forward to the English lesson. Vocabulary learning process was also fun and easy. Because they were learning through computer games, they didn't even notice how the lesson went by. Several studies evidenced the efficacy regarding vocabulary learning in computer games and quizzes, simulations. These studies have used a variety of measurements , such as vocabulary recognition, multiple choice, matching, cloze tests and a Vocabulary Knowledge Scale in which participants self-report on their mastery of a word. Thus, the effectiveness of computer games in vocabulary learning has been demonstrated. Download 13.49 Kb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
