Protocol for the experiment on IODINE September-November 2016

1 Goal.
Obtain information on the effects of iodide (KI) and iodate (KIO₃) on the growth of two varieties of basil (Ocimum basilicum), cv. Red Robin and cv. Tigullio Genovese.

2 Material and methods.
The trial will be conducted using a floating system composed by some containers of 50 litres. In each container, we will put eight plants for each variety (sixteen plants in total for each container). The plants will be put in polystyrene flat containers.
We are planned two experiments. The first experiment is a preliminary experiment with the aim to check the best iodide and iodate concentration. The following treatments, each with 2 replicates, will be compared:

1) KI 0.1 mM;	5) KIO3 0.2 mM;
2) KI 0.2 mM;	6) KIO3 0.4 mM;
3) KI 0.3 mM;	7) KIO3 0.6 mM;
4) KI 0.4 mM;	8) KIO3 0.8 mM;

9) control (0 mM of KI and KIO₃)
In the second experiment only two concentrations for iodide and two for iodate will be selected, for a total of 4 treatments +the control.
Nutrient solution
The following nutrient solution composition will be used for all treatments (also for the control).
