Incessant violence' has been only one aspect of Pakistan's national tragedy since independence. The 
country has never had an elected government that survived long enough to be voted out of office. The 
country has spent half its life under military, dictatorships, with the result that now soldiers 
outnumber doctors 9 to 1. More than half the population is illiterate. Per capita economic growth is 
approximately zero, and Pakistan has been named as one of the five most corrupt countries in the 
world. Yet no one in Pakistan believes that their country should have remained part of India.
