Reflection Journal for Giving Clear Instructions. Before the Module about Giving Clear Instructions, I used to think that I have to explain all the stages of the activity to my students before involving them in it. In other words, my instructions were long and unclear for my students. This always caused misunderstandings and my students got confused every time. Then I had to give them instructions in L1 so that they could understand what to do. I believed giving instructions in Uzbek saves time and prevent my students from being confused, especially with difficult tasks. After watching a video about giving short and clear instructions, I started to think about how to give understandable instructions and learned some strategies for giving instructions in English. I understood that instructions should be supportive and easy to follow and it is more effective when instructions are broken into chunks gradually so that students can engage in the task well. In addition, using handouts or body language is important while giving instructions. I have read two articles "Common Mistakes in Teacher Talk" and " Giving Effective Instructions: Using Think Aloud". With the help of this module, I assumed that using quality teacher talk can promote effective student-centered interactions. I always tried to help my students with their pronunciation while reading texts and I tried to support them to express their opinions while speaking. However, Article 1 informed me that if I help my students every time when they struggle in giving answers, I take away their chances to get it right, and consequently, they will rely on me and stop trying. I understood it is better to wait a bit and make students respond themselves rather than suggest possible answers. Now I know how to give short, clear, supportive, and effective instructions and will apply these suggestions in my content lesson plans. Thank you very much. Download 13.7 Kb.
