Once you’ve calculated your fish tank volume and biological filter surface area, you should be able to calculate how many pounds of fish your system can support. There are other factors that will influence how well your fish adapt to the system, like dissolved oxygen and nitrite levels, but these can be adjusted after your system is running.
The pH range for each fish should be compared with the pH range of the plants you wish to grow. While most fish can tolerate high pH levels, plants prefer a pH from 6.5-6.8, although many can tolerate neutral pH values.

- Time to harvest: 8-16 months
- Feed: aquatic plants, algae, plant-based manufactured tilapia feed
Tilapia are the easiest, most popular fish for aquaponic systems. They tolerate a wide range of temperatures, stocking densities, and feed rates, while growing to a harvestable rate in less than 18 months.
Tilapia are a warm-water fish, and although they can tolerate cooler temperatures, they prefer a water temperature near 80° throughout

the year. This makes them the perfect companion for fruiting vegetables, and a good companion for leafy greens. However, their preference for warm water makes them unable to work well wit broccoli and cauliflower.
The biggest drawback to using tilapia is that it can be illegal in somf areas to buy and farm. Check with your local extension agent for information on necessary permits for growing tilapia, and make sure you never release your tilapia into the wild. It is an invasive fish, and i: can destroy habitats very quickly.
