Step 4.
Use a permanent marker to mark under the first horizontal metal cage piece on 2 IBC totes.

Step 5,
Remove the top bars from the metal cages of the 2 IBC totes with permanent marker. Remove the totes from the cages.
Step 6.
Use a jigsaw to cut off the tops of both IBC totes along the permanent marker lines. This should give you 2 grow beds approximately 12” deep.
Step 7.
Use a reciprocating saw to cut the first row of squares off the tops of both metal cages and the bottom of one cage. (You will have to remove the base to do this). This should give you a cage piece to hold each of the grow beds.
Step 8.
Place the plastic IBC tote grow beds inside the matching cage pieces. These are the grow beds.
Step 9.
Use cinder blocks to build supporting pillars for the grow beds. Make 4 pillars 3 blocks high in a square so that the corners of the grow beds sit squarely in the center of the blocks. Place the 3 beds in a row with a few inches in between each bed. The bed closest to the fish tank will be Bed A, the middle bed will be Bed B, and the bed farthest from the fish tank will be Bed C.

Step 10.
Build the drain pipes:
  • Drill a 1” hole close to the center in the bottom of each grow bed. If there is a cap or valve in the IBC tote, use 100% silicone to seal it.
  • In each bed, place a rubber washer inside the grow bed on the 1" hole, and connect a barrel connector and tighten.
  • Place a female adapter onto the barrel connector inside each grow bed.
  • Cut 3 10" pieces of 1” PVC pipe.
  • Place one 10" pipe into each female adapter inside each grow bed.
  • Place the female PVC elbow on the bottom of the barrel connector on the outside of Bed C.
  • Place a female PVC t-fitting on the bottom of the barrel connectors on the outside of Bed B and Bed A.

  • Cut enough 1” PVC pipe to connect the elbow underneath Bed C to the t-fitting on Bed B.
  • Cut enough 1" PVC pipe to connect the t-fitting underneath Bed B to the t-fitting on Bed A.
  • Drill a 1” hole in the biofilter 45° to the left of the top hole. Make sure this hole will sit 6” lower than the top of the stand pipes in the grow beds.
  • Connect a male and female threaded to slip adapter through the new hole in the biofilter. Use an o-ring between them.
  • Connect a 1” PVC elbow to the adapter.
  • Cut enough 1” PVC pipe to connect the t-fitting underneath Bed A to the PVC elbow.
