Step 11.
Connect the biofilter to the grow beds and fish tank.
- Place the water pump in the bottom of the biofilter.
- Use an adapter to connect 1” flexible tubing to the water pump.
- Cut the tubing a few inches above the top of the biofilter barrel.
- Attach a 1" t-fitting to the top of the tubing.
- Connect 1" flexible tubing to the t-fitting, and measure out enough to reach over the lip of the fish tank.
- Use zip ties to hold the tubing to the cage of the fish tank.
- Attach a 1” valve to the end of the tubing to control flow.
- Connect 1” flexible tubing to the other side of the t-fitting, and measure the tubing to the closest corner of Bed A. Cut the tubing, and connect it to the cage with zip ties.
- Attach a 1” t-fitting to the tubing.
- Connect a 1" valve to leg of the t-fitting that points towards the inside of the grow bed.
- Connect a 1" 90° elbow to the valve so the water will spray down into the bed.
- Connect 1" flexible tubing to the remaining leg of the t-fitting, and measure the tubing to the closest corner of Bed B. Cut the tubing, and connect it to the cage with zip ties.
- Attach a 1” t-fitting, 1" valve, and 90° elbow like Bed A.
161
- Connect 1” flexible tubing to the remaining leg of the t-fitting, and measure the tubing to the closest corner of Bed C. Cut the tubing, and connect it to the cage with zip ties.
- Attach a 1” 90° elbow to the tubing.
- Attach a 1" valve to the elbow.
- Attach a 1" 90° elbow to the valve.
Step 12.
Install the air pump and air stones.
- Attach the air pump to the highest point of the system; likely the outside edge of the fish tank.
- Attach a short length of 8mm tubing to the air pump, and then attach a barbed t-connector.
- Run a length of 8mm tubing from the t-connector to the nearest corner of Bed A.
- Attach the tubing to the sides of the grow beds with zip ties.
- Attach a barbed t-connector to the tubing.
- Drill an 8mm (5/16”] hole in the top edge of Bed A.
162
- Attach enough tubing to reach from the t-connector to an air stone in the bottom of the grow bed.
- Attach tubing to the t-connector, and measure enough to reach the nearest corner of Bed B.
- Using the same method, install an air stone.
- Attach tubing to the t-connector, and measure enough to reach the nearest corner of Bed C.
- Use the same method to install an air stone, except use a barbed 90° connector for the final air stone.
- Drill an 8mm hole in the top of the fish tank.
- Attach tubing to the t-connector near the air pump, and measure enough tubing to reach the bottom of the tank.
163
Attach an air stone to the tubing, and set the air stone in the bottom of the fish tank.
Step 13.
Drill a 1" hole in the fish tank at the same height as the first (lower) 1” hole in the swirl filter. Make sure this hole is on the same side as the grow beds.
