  • Dark, leafy greens like kale and Swiss chard are easy to grow in an aquaponic system. They tolerate a wide range of nutrient and pH values, and they have very few pest problems. Dark salad greens like cooler weather, and can tolerate light shade. Warm temperatures can cause leaves to taste bitter, and plants to grow long and leggy.
The roots of these plants are susceptible to rot if the water is too warm, so these greens pair well with cool-water fish.

Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant are all members of the Solanaceae family, and are frequently listed as easy-to-grow hydroponic plants. However, adding fish into the equation makes it more difficult to maintain the amount of nutrition these plants require for fruiting.
It is much more difficult to supplement an aquaponic system with a nutrient solution, because the nutrients can have adverse effects on the fish. This is why it’s easier to grow fruiting plants, like tomatoes, in growing media. The media holds onto bacteria that turn fish waste into nutrients, which gives the plant a more nutritious foundation.
Deep-channel systems can support plants in the Solanaceae family, but it will either require a higher stocking density or carefully-calculated
supplements. Either system will need trellising to support heavy,
      fruiting branches.
If you want to grow tomatoes, you will want to decide if you are growing determinate or indeterminate varieties. Both have advantages in an aquaponic system.
Determinate varieties are more compact and bushy, and each branch terminates as soon as there is fruit set at the outermost bud. Indeterminate varieties are vining tomatoes, and they will continue growing and producing fruit until they are killed off by temperature changes. Determinate varieties are easier to grow in a media bed or

Dutch bucket system, while indeterminate varieties are easier to trellis and can be grown in DWC systems.
Plants in this family require warm temperatures to produce sweet fruit, so it’s best to grow them outdoors during the summer season. This also makes them a good pair with warm-water fish.
Plants in the Solanaceae family are susceptible to many pests, including:
    • Mosaic virus
    • Blight
    • Whiteflies
    • Spider mites
    • Blossom end rot
    • Grey mold

    • Stressed plants are more susceptible to pests, so it’s important to give them plenty of space to avoid branches rubbing together and creating open wounds. Adequate light is also important for plants to grow bushy and compact, instead of long and leggy.
