Step 2.
Use the 3/4" male threaded to slip adapter to trace an intake hole on one side of the bottom of the grow bed. Cut out the hole.

Step 3.
Use the 1/2" male threaded to slip adapter to trace an intake hole on the other side of the grow bed. Cut out the hole.

Step 4.
Place the grow bed upside down on top of the barrel. Mark an area for fish access, and cut out a hole. The hole needs to be big enough to use a small net to manage fish. Allow enough room for the grow bed to sit firmly on top of the barrel, but don’t cut too low or else you will lower the capacity of your fish tank.

Step 5.
Cut a small hole in back of the barrel near the top for the water pump's power cord.
Step 6.
Drill 8 holes around the bottom of the grow bed through the solid lip of the edge of the barrel. Drill 8 matching holes in the top of the fish

tank. When the bell siphon and water pump have been connected, you will thread zip ties through these holes to hold the grow bed onto the fish tank.

Step 7.
Build the bell siphon
  • Put one #18 o-ring over the threads of the %" male adapter.
  • Push the male adapter up through the hole in the bottom of the grow bed.
  • Put the second #18 o-ring over the threads of the male adapter, and attach the %" female adapter. Hand tighten.

Cut a 6” piece of %" PVC, and place it over the female adapter. (You may need to adjust this depending on your water level)
Put the 3/4"-1/1/2" adapter on top of the 3/4" PVC pipe.
Use a circular saw or small drill bit to cut notches in the bottom 1/2" of the 2" PVC pipe. This will allow water through the bottom of the bell.
Place the 8" piece of 2" PVC over the adapter. Put the 2” cap on top.
Use a circular saw or small drill bit to cut holes or lines in the 3" piece of PVC. This is the gravel guard, which allows water to reach the siphon, but keeps out the grow media.

  • Place the gravel guard over the 2” PVC pipe.
  • Place the 3” cap on the 3" gravel guard.
  • Cut a 4" piece of 3/4" PVC and attach it to the underside of the male adapter.
  • Attach one 3/4" 90° elbow at the end of the 3/4" PVC pipe.
  • Cut an 8” piece of 3/4" PVC pipe and attach it to the 90° elbow.
  • Attach the other %" 90° elbow to the end of the 3/4" PVC pipe.

  • Step 8.
Put one #14 o-ring over the threads of the 1/2" male adapter. Push the male adapter up through the corresponding hole in the bottom of the grow bed. Put the second #14 o-ring over the threads of the male adapter, and attach the 1/2" female adapter. Hand tighten.
    Step 9.
Place the water pump in the bottom of the fish tank, and then place the grow bed on top of the fish tank. Attach the 1" PVC pipe to the water pump and to the bottom of the 1/2" male adapter. You will have to measure the precise length based on your barrel and pump.
    Step 10.
Attach a 9” length of 1/2" PVC pipe onto the female end of the adapter in the grow bed. Attach the 1/2" 90° elbow on top of the ¥2" pipe.
    121

Step 11.
Cut a 6" piece of PVC pipe, and drill small holes in a line on one side. Start with a few, run your system, and add more as needed. Attach the pipe to the 90° elbow. Cap the pipe with the 1/2" end cap.
