Step 1.
Remove the bars on the top of one IBC tote. Use a jigsaw to cut out the top of the IBC tote. This will be the fish tank. Place the fish tank on top of 4 evenly-spaced cinder blocks.
Step 2.
Build the swirl filter:
- Drill a 1" hole 2/3 of the way up one 55-gallon barrel.

- Drill another 1” hole 90° to the right of the first hole, and a few inches higher.
- Attach the male and female threaded to slip adapters together through the hole with o-rings between them.
- Drill a third 1” hole at the bottom of the barrel.
- Attach the male and female threaded to slip adapters together through the first hole with o-rings between them. Attach a 4" length of 1” PVC on the inside of the barrel, and a t-fitting on the end.
- Attach a 3” length of 1” PVC on each side of the t-fitting.
- Attach a 1” 90° elbow on the end of each 3" length of 1” PVC pipe.
- Attach the male and female threaded to slip adapters with o- rings on each side to the bottom hole. Attach a 1” length of 1" PVC on the outside of the barrel.
- Attach a 1" valve to the 1” PVC pipe.

Step 3:
Build the biofilter:
- Drill a 1” hole at the same height as the 2nd (higher) 1” hole in the swirl filter.
- Connect a male and female threaded to slip adapters together through the hole with o-rings between them. Attach a 4” length of 1” PVC on the inside adapter.
- Connect the higher hole in the swirl filter to the biofilter with a short length of 1” PVC pipe attached to the adapters.
- Attach a 1” t-fitting to the end of the 4” length of 1” PVC.
- Cut 2 pieces of 3" long 1” PVC pipe.

- Drill small holes in the 2 pieces of PVC pipe.
- Attach the two pieces on both sides of the 1" t-fitting.
- Attach 1" caps on the ends of both pieces of PVC. You may need to glue these caps on.
