Role of listening in learning English (Language). English is ubiquitous language in the world thus; it is a mainly used language in international events. Nowadays, more and more youngsters are becoming fond of learning English as it, sometimes, shows modernity in the 21 st century. In fact, before you learn how to speak English you should learn how to listen to English. Now, I want you to remember how you learned your native language as a baby. You constantly listened to people communicating around you; you listened to TV and radio. Initially, you took in all this information, all of this input, and in one magical day, you started talking. Once you learned some words, you continued listening and you learned correctly using these words in the sentences which allowed you not to stop while talking and increased coherence in your speech. All the information and words you had been learning and building up inside came out automatically and now you have hardly any problem with your local language. Surely, there are some easier ways of learning English, the first of which is listening. Why is the listening a crucial part of learning any language? Well, listening, among other sections of English, (or other languages that you are learning) eases and accelerates the process of learning. If you listen a lot, for instance, English songs you are likely to speak like a native speaker since you try to pronounce the words as you listen and this underpins the left hemisphere of your brain to let the words come out with novel accent. As you listen, you are filling your memory bank with information. In learning English, you are like a sponge that absorbs all of the English you faced, and you have to listen again and again so as to store it in your memory. The more times you can listen to, the better because as you take in more input, more information, that magic day which happened in your childhood comes faster and you start to talk in English naturally. Listening carefully will also help you to improve your accent. You will get use to the language and begin to recognize some common expressions, intonations and sounds which enables you comprehend spoken English easily. One hour of listening to correct material is more effective than many hours of class time reading studying the wrong material. In most language schools and English classes students and teachers mainly focus on reading therefore students ask their teacher to do a lot of reading and then they are asked to start practicing speaking about what they have read. This is overly wrong method. How can a student speak English if they have not heard it spoken correctly? By listening to English, you are able to recognize the differences between sounds, words, and pronunciation. Your speaking skills will improve when you can hear conversational English better. This is why many students who do not have a lot of practice listening to English, think that native English speakers speak too fast and that is why they cannot understand them when they speak quickly and naturally. This is because these students do not have the skill to recognize the differences between the sounds and the words that native speakers are saying. However, if you master your listening skills, you will easily be able to recognize the words, sounds and phrases the native speakers are using and you will be able to use these words, sounds and phases yourself when you are speaking English. Let us come one by one the importance of listening to music and listening to movies while watching. The more we pay close attention to listening to music on the way of learning a language, the better understanding of that language we will gain because while listening to English music you are prone to enunciate correctly, even unknown words, which assists you later when you learn these words by heart. However, you had better control the normal volume, lest it damages the hearing ability. Listening to music also helps you to have the awareness of different accents. Of course, you do not have to learn every accent but you have to listen to different accents while having a contact with people whose accents are different. In order to improve the skill of understanding of different accents you should choose one music or video with subtitle and try to read aloud in sequence until you comprehend the text 100percent. After understanding the meaning fully just listen to again but with no look at the subtitle and this helps to differentiate homophones and the words that are pronounced similarly. Watching an English movie and understanding it is a fairly advanced level but majority of English learners have a lacking skill to understand what they watch. This is because they watch whole videos or shows for a long time and in the end, they get nothing but frustration. However, not understanding some parts for example, jokes is normal, as you do not know the culture; you should take the subtitle and watch the small scene of the movie several times until you understand. Then look at the subtitle and watch the scene one more time and if there are new words look up a dictionary then add them to your lexicon. Surely, you will learn
guessing while watching and this comes in handy in oral conversation as you have to understand what your partner says and cannot look up a word while talking to somebody. If you practise a lot and have enough experience as a result, you will not encounter any problem while conversing. If you have a good listening skill, you can raise the level of reading, wide range of vocabulary, speaking and writing as well. As you listen to and watch a movie, you try to read faster and understand it as possible as you can and you learn to find a main point that helps you with your reading.
