THE HAMPSHIRE COLLEGE SUMMER STUDIES IN MATHEMATICS REQUEST FOR SPONSOR RECOMMENDATION Dear Colleague, Your support of your student's application to the 50th Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics is appreciated, and we ask your assistance in evaluating that application. Participants are expected to participate actively in the processes of mathematics: discovering patterns, making definitions, formulating conjectures, devising proofs, applying and generalizing results, and sharing mathematics orally and in writing. Small interactive classes meet for 4 hours each morning and the entire faculty participate in collaborative 3-hour evening problem sessions. Your evaluation of the candidate's interest in and capacity for mathematics will help us identify students who will contribute to, profit from, and enjoy the intense intellectual atmosphere of the Summer Studies.
