Section B Questions

Q1.6 This is an essay of no less than 200 words.

Compare what you have written in the Reflective Learning Journal Task
1.2 (page 10) to what you have just read.

Give as full a description as possible regarding the methodology/ies you were exposed to.

Language teaching has seen a multitude of methodologies throughout its history, each with its own unique approach to imparting knowledge and skills. In my language learning journey, I have been exposed to several methodologies, including the Grammar Translation Method, Direct Method, Audio-Lingual Method, Communicative Approach, Natural Way, and Humanistic Approach. In this essay, I will provide a comprehensive comparison of these methodologies and reflect on their impact on my learning journey.

The Grammar Translation Method is a traditional approach that emphasizes the explicit teaching of grammar rules and translation between the target language and the native language. It often involves rote memorization of vocabulary and sentences. This method can be effective for understanding the structure of a language but may not foster effective communication.

The Direct Method focuses on oral communication without the use of the native language. It encourages students to learn the language through immersion and practice. This method promotes real-life communication but can be challenging for beginners.

The Audio-Lingual Method emphasizes repetition and drills to develop automatic responses in the target language. It focuses on habits and patterns rather than understanding grammar rules. This method can lead to quick language production but may lack deeper comprehension.

The Communicative Approach places communication at the forefront of language learning. It encourages students to use the language for real-life purposes, fostering practical skills. This method is highly effective for developing conversational abilities.

The Natural Way advocates for language learning in a way similar to how we acquire our native language, emphasizing meaningful exposure and comprehension before production. It is student-centered and aims for a stress-free, natural learning process.

The Humanistic Approach centers around the individual learner, focusing on their personal needs, interests, and motivations. It promotes a holistic approach to language learning and values self-expression and creativity.

In my Reflective Learning Journal Task 1.2, I noted my preference for the Communicative Approach, appreciating its real-world applicability and interactive nature. However, after further exposure to the methodologies, I have come to recognize the value in elements from various approaches. The Grammar Translation Method provides a strong foundation in grammar, while the Direct Method enhances speaking skills. The Communicative Approach excels in practical communication, and the Natural Way and Humanistic Approach bring a sense of personalization and creativity to language learning.

In conclusion, the diverse language teaching methodologies I have been exposed to have broadened my understanding of language education. Each methodology offers unique strengths, and their effectiveness depends on the context and the goals of language learning. As a language learner, being aware of these methodologies allows me to tailor my approach based on my needs and preferences, creating a well-rounded language learning experience.
