Topic: Test types: Norm-referenced tests and Criterion-referenced tests

Home assignment: To give examples to the types of tests and clarify them

Norm-referenced tests: School readiness tests can be example for this type of test. Why? Because, imagine that Bob is 6 years old and is going to take NRT. After the test, Bob’s result on this test will be measured considering the other children’s performance on the test. If Bob lacked of showing his cognitive, linguistic abilities compared to other children, he will not be eligible to go to school. After all, it will be found that he cannot assimilate the program that are taught in primary education.

IQ tests, developmental screening tests, academic proficiency tests can also be considered as NRTs.

Criterion-referenced tests:

As the name itself dictates, this types of tests measure the performance according to the criterion, standards without considering how others perform on the test. For example, one of my friends couldn’t enroll for the National Security Academy, the reason for this was his height. In order to get into the Academy, one’s height must be at least 1.65cm not shorter than this. And this is one of the criterion that one should be suitable for getting into it.

Another example for this test type can be state exams that were held across Uzbekistan. Why? Because, after the test the State Testing Center will measure all the scores that applicants gained and according to the number of quotas in HEIs, overall level of attendance of the applicants and the difficulty level of the test they will decide the average passing score, thereby announcing who has failed or not. It is STC who determine the testing criteria, passing scores, the number of questions applicants need to answer correctly to ace the test.
