You most likely know how to say these sounds:
‘m’ ‘p’, ‘s’ and ‘d’. However do you know how to say
them when they are together? For example have
you ever had to say a word like ‘glimpsed’
There are FOUR consonants in a row at the end of
this word, ‘ mpsd ‘. The ‘e’ is not a vowel. Even
though ‘glimpsed’ has seven sounds in it, it is only
ONE syllable!

What are the English Vowel Sound IPA symbols
(International Phonetic Alphabet)? English has 20 vowel
sounds. Short vowels in the IPA are /ɪ/-pit, /e/-pet, /æ/-pat,
/ʌ/-cut, /ʊ/-put, /ɒ/-dog, /ə/-about. Long vowels in the IPA
are /i:/-week, /ɑ:/-hard,/ɔ:/-fork,/ɜ:/-heard, /u:/-boot.
Diphthong vowels in the IPA are /eɪ/-place, /oʊ/-home, /
aʊ/-mouse, /ɪə/-clear, /eə/-care, /ɔɪ/-boy, /aɪ/-find, /ʊə/-
tour.
I understand that to many people that can look a little
overwhelming. But I promise it’s not so bad. We’ll break it
down and give you real examples and practise.

Sound Level Meter
Use a sound level meter to make quick and accurate spot-
checks of the noise levels. A hand-held meter is ideal when
people are only working at a few fixed locations - you
measure at each and calculate the exposure as a Time
Weighted Average. When the noise levels are particularly
high a more advanced meter should be used to assess the
level at the ear when wearing hearing protectors. The
greatest benefit when using a sound level meter rather than
a dosimeter is that you are present when the noise occurs,
so you can assess if the sound levels are representative of
normal operations.

You need to know that when you are saying words with
consonant clusters in them it is very important that you say
all the consonants as one syllable. A mistake often made by
Asian speakers among others is to put them into extra
syllables. For example:
'glimpsed' could become 'glimp sid' 
or 'bribed' could become 'brib id' 
This does not sound correct.
Finally here is an exercise to let you know when you have
really mastered this.

The effect of an “h-consonant” cluster (hC or “pre-aspirated”
consonants, where “C” stands for any consonant, e.g. hp, ht,
hc, hk; see below) on the preceding vowel is very important
for, in most cases, the distinction between long and short
vowels is neutralized. In other words, it is usually very
difficult, if not impossible, to tell the difference between long
and short vowels before a combination of “h” and another
consonant. Before hC, long and short vowels seem to merge
into a single vowel which is short in duration, but closer to
the quality of the long vowel.
