Part 2
The Case of Virgin Atlantic

  1. In this current case, stakeholders are people or organizations that are impacted by the operations of Virgin Atlantic. The role of these stakeholders is important because they can have a significant influence in the business. Primary stakeholders are shareholders (Delta), suppliers (REN Clean skincare, MNH), customers, and their employees. Secondary stakeholders are UK government, their competitors (huge airline companies), mass media, local community, and their non-profit partnerships. Tertiary stakeholders of Virgin Atlantic are, as mentioned in the case, environment, and political groups.

  2. On the one hand, it is good for the economy if the government provides incentives to maintain employment level in Virgin Atlantic. On the other hand, government can only give small incentives and it is impossible to maintain employment level in huge companies like Virgin Atlantic through government incentives. In this particular situation, government is right by refusing to bailout because the company is headquartered in tax-heaven, which is British Virgin Islands. Depending on the severity of the situation in the aviation industry, governments should provide aids, such as subsidies, and loans.

  3. In my opinion, it would not be moral and fair to use taxpayer’s money to support billionaires. As mentioned in the case, it was challenging to fund lower scale companies let alone bailing out the huge aviation magnate in the industry. Furthermore, even though the company has enough funds to pledge their redundant employees, the company pledged small amount of funds in relation to its overall wealth. I firmly think that in this situation, it would be more moral to bailout more lower scale companies instead of focusing more on huge ones.

  4. My personal recommendation would be to allocate more focus on the employees who were redundant while the coronavirus outbreak. As the company focuses on employee engagement, diversity and inclusivity, it would not be ethical for them to fire their employees without paid leaves and asking a bailout from the government. Such companies would survive in these situations compared to lower scale companies.
