1. The social, cultural and technological milieu of the early 20th century gave birth to a literary movement known as Modernism. Focusing on individual experience, experimenting with form and style, and rejecting conventional social norms and ideals were its defining characteristics. Incoherent narrative framing, an emphasis on psychological interiority, and a dubious view of social structure characterized the Modernist movement in American literature from 1914 to 1945.
Stream-of-consciousness storytelling, broken storylines, and the use of symbolism and metaphor are some of the key elements of modernist writing. Irony, parody, and satire were also used more frequently during this period, and aspects of popular culture were more commonly incorporated into literary works.
T.S. Eliot, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein are some of the most famous modernist his American writers of this era. These writers sought to reflect the complexities of modern life through their creative methods and exploration of the inner workings of their characters. They challenged conventional forms and norms, resulting in some of the most innovative and important works of the 20th century.
2. The themes of Ernest Hemingway's work often reflected the beliefs and experiences of the "lost generation" of the 1920s. He was known for his minimalist, no-nonsense writing style. Hemingway frequently uses the following themes in his books and short stories
1. War and its consequences:
Hemingway served as an ambulance driver in World War I, and many of his books, including ‘A Farewell to Arms’, explore the psychological and physical toll of war on both soldiers and civilians. .
2. Love, Lust, Loss:
Hemingway's protagonists often struggle with complicated platonic love relationships. In her works like ‘The Sun Also Rises’ and ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’, love is portrayed as all-consuming and ultimately unsatisfying.
3. Masculinity and Courage:
Hemingway was fascinated by what it means to be a ‘man’, and many of his novels feature protagonists who identify with their strength, seduction, and courage.
4. Nature and outdoors:
Hemingway loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. His appreciation for nature is evident in works like "The Old Man and the Sea", where a lone fisherman's battle with a giant marlin serves as a metaphor for the human condition.

3. Writer J.D. Salinger, best known for his book ‘The Catcher in the Rye’, is author J.D. Jones mentioned.
