The work is a gallery of various types from the time of England in the 14th century. The author depicts images of knights and merchants, a student and a lawyer, a pardoner and a monk, abbess of a convent, artisans, a miller and a widow looking for her next husband. All characters tell their own stories that fit their psychological and social make-up. In The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, one can find both a romantic story of a knight about love and friendship, and a comic story - a miller tells about a cuckold carpenter; there is also a shipbuilder's story about a rogue monk who paid the woman he seduced with money borrowed from her husband. Many expressive stories expressing the spirit of the times are contained in the Canterbury Tales - this is a sensitive story of a student about the virtuous Griselda, the victim of the trials of her jealous and stern husband, and other author's interpretations. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer manages to present in general most of the most important literary genres of his era: we are confronted with a chivalric novel (represented by a knight, and a courtly tale (told by a squire), and a fablio (transmitted by a miller, majordomo, skipper), and the so-called the “animal” epic (as recounted by the monastery chaplain), even the lives of the saints (the story of the second nun), the sermon genre (the prologue performed by the seller of indulgences), the collection of short stories contains a moral allegory, an ethical treatise (told by the priest). Chaucer borrows the plots of many stories in the collection of short stories, but at the same time he manages to complicate the plot, saturate it with realistic details, combining the dynamics of action and psychological analysis. Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is one of the first literary monuments created in a single common English language. This work has outgrown the framework of the Middle Ages, it contains the clearly manifested qualities of Chaucerian humanism: the mood of love of life, interest in specific people, a description of social justice, democracy and nationality. The Canterbury Tales is based on a secular beginning, despite the given religious plot. It is secularity that allows us to talk about the pre-Renaissance in the work, because secularity acts as a criterion for the artistic culture of the Renaissance. Chaucer can be called the first and only representative of the Pre-Renaissance in England. Subsequently, the strongest influence on English literature of Chaucer's work is reflected in the development of moralistic, everyday realism. Characteristic of the mastery of Geoffrey Chaucer, the free mastery of already known material, the combination of the tragic with the comic, the base with the high, was later mastered and developed in the work of Shakespeare and Johnson. Enlightenment writers of the 18th century, as well as such well-known English writers as C. Dickens, W. Scott, etc., were also under his influence to varying degrees. After analyzing the features of the narrative poetics of Geoffrey Chaucer, we can conclude that the writer's works belong mainly to narrative poetry. Narrativity The Canterbury Tales reveals the movement of the artistic thought of Geoffrey Chaucer from the tradition of the Middle Ages to the tendencies of the Renaissance. In The Canterbury Tales, it is the narrator who can be called the main organizer in the text of the narrative. At the same time, Chaucer, as an author, is characterized by the development and complication of the figures of narrators.
