Dear Professor Stone,
Our laboratory intends to embark on research into X-ray structural analysis of different biological substances. We wish to investigate the influence of particle additions on the polypeptide crystal structure. Meanwhile, we have started collecting literature along these lines. With this purpose in view we are writing to inquire whether you are able to supply us with a list of references or with any information you have on hand.
Perhaps you can also mention some other prominent researchers engaged in the same experiment to whom I may turn with the same inquiry.
We trust you will likewise be interested in such contacts. Please accept my apologies for the inconveniences I have occasioned you. Looking forward to hearing from you and with best regards,
Sincerely yours,
Alfred P. Parker
Chief of the Sander’s Laboratories

13. Low self-esteem ‘shrinks brain’

By Pallab Ghosh
BBC Science correspondent
People with a low sense of self worth are more likely to suffer from memory loss as they get older, say researchers.
The study, presented at a conference at the Royal Society in London, also found that the brains of these people were more likely to shrink compared with those who have a high sense of self esteem.
Dr Sonia Lupien, of McGill University in Montreal surveyed 92 senior citizens over 15 years and studied their brain scans.
She found that the brains of those with low self-worth were op to a fifth smaller than those who felt good about themselves.
These people also performed worse in memory and learning texts.

14. Ferry firms step up car searches

COMPULSORY vehicle checks for illegal immigrants are to be started in Zeebrugge within the next few weeks, following the success of the P&O Stena crackdown on ferry stowaways in Calais.
It is expected that private security staff, paid for by P&O Stena, will begin searching lorries and cars waiting to board its Dover-bound ferries. The company fears illegal immigrants are now aware of the crackdown in Calais and are diverting to other ports. Discussion with port authorities are already under hand.

15. That was in May. In November a cold, unseen stranger, whom the doctors called Pneumonia, stalked about the colony, touching one here and there with his icy fingers. Over on the east side this ravager strode boldly, smiting his victims by scores, but his feet trod slowly through the maze of the narrow and moss-grown “places”.

‘Jeff mate, it’s me, Scott. How ya doing?’

17. «Whenever, Wherever»

Lucky you were born that far away so
So we could both make fun of distance
Lucky that I love a foreign land for
The lucky fact of your existence
Baby I would climb the Andes solely
To count the freckles on your body
Never could imagine there were only
Too many ways to love somebody

Lo ro lo le lo le

Lo ro lo le lo le
Can't you see...I'm at your feet

Whenever, wherever

We'll learn to be together
I'll be there and you'll be near
And that's the deal my dear
They're over, you're under
You'll never have to wonder
We can always play by ear
But that's the deal my dear

Lucky that my lips not only mumble

They spill kisses like a fountain
Lucky that my breasts are small and humble
So you don't confuse them with mountains
Lucky I have strong legs like my mother
To run for cover when I need it
And these two eyes are for no other
The day you leave we'll cry a river

Lo ro lo le lo le

Lo ro lo le lo le
At your feet...I'm at your feet

Whenever, Wherever

We're meant to be together
I'll be there and you'll be near
And that's the deal my dear
They're over, you're under
You'll never have to wonder
We can always play by ear
But that's the deal my dear

Lo ro lo le lo le

Lo ro lo le lo le

sink or fly, say it again

Lo ro lo le lo le lo le

Tell me one more time

That you'll live
Lost in my eyes

Whenever, wherever

We'll learn to be together
I'll be there and you'll be near
And that's the deal my dear
They're over, you're under
You've got me head over heels
There's nothing left to fear
If you really feel the way I feel

Whenever, wherever

We're meant to be together
I'll be there and you'll be near
And that's the deal my dear
They're over, you're under
You've got me head over heels
There's nothing left to fear
If you really feel the way I feel

19. 1. THE MAIN PROBLEM – A SATISFACTORY DEFINITION OF TRUTH.

Our discussion will be centered around the notion4 of truth. The main problem is that of giving a satisfactory definition of this notion, i.e., a definition which is materially adequate and formally correct. But such a formulation of the problem, because of its generality, cannot be considered unequivocal, and requires some further comments.
In order to avoid any ambiguity, we must first specify the conditions under which the definition of truth will be considered adequate from the material point of view. The desired definition does not aim to specify the meaning of a familiar word used to denote a novel notion; on the contrary, it aims to catch hold of the actual meaning of an old notion. We must then characterize this notion precisely enough to enable anyone to determine whether the definition actually fulfills its task.
Secondly, we must determine on what the formal correctness of the definition depends. Thus, we must specify the words or concepts which we wish to use in defining the notion of truth; and we must also give the formal rules to which the definition should conform. Speaking more generally, we must describe the formal structure of the language in which the definition will be given.
The discussion of these points will occupy a considerable portion of the first part of the paper.

20. My fellow citizens!

I am sorry to interrupt you in the middle of a pleasant day when you are relaxing after a busy week of work. It is beautiful here in Washington today, and I understand it is pretty much the same all across the country – really the first day of summer for all of us. So I am grateful to you for taking a few minutes to listen to me.
I would not take your time for anything less than a question of grave concern to every American. For some of us in the White House that has been a week of heave trial, and in some respects of heartbreak and deep disappointment. There are three matters on which I felt it was my duty to report to you without delay(…)
(…) Somewhere, this afternoon, there are listening men who will one day occupy this office. I would betray my obligation to them and to their generation of Americans, as well as my duty to the past and to all of you today, if I failed to act as I have. Good-bye, and God bless you all.

21. Message Jones

You appear to have forgotten your skirt. As
I think is made perfectly clear in your
contract of employment, staff are expected
to be fully dressed at all times.

Cleave

Hah! Undeniably flirtatious. Thought for a little while whilst pretending to study tedious-beyond-belief manuscript from lunatic. Have never messaged Daniel Cleaver before but brilliant thing about messaging system is you can be really quite cheeky and informal, even to your boss. Also can spend ages practising. This is what sent.
Message Cleave
Sir, am appalled by message. Whilst skirt
could reasonably be described as a little
on the skimpy side (thrift being ever our
watchword in editorial), consider it gross
misrepresentation to describe said skirt as
absent, and considering contacting union.

23. – Jeat jet?

  • What?

  • Jeat lunch yet?

  • I’ll eat when I get home. My mother always has lunch ready for me when I get home.

  • I got a half chicken sandwich in my room. Ya want it? I didn’t touch it or anything.

  • No, thank you. Really.

  • You just played tennis for Chrissike. Aren’tcha hungry?

24. It was a day any bride would wish for – brilliant sunshine, everything went clockwork and there were no embarrassing mishaps.

The wedding of Prince Charles to Camilla Parker Bowles attracted thousands of onlookers on to the streets of Windsor, keen to catch a glimpse of the couple before and after the civil ceremony at the Guildhall.
A frosty start did little to dampen the spirits of the couple of hundred fans who took up the best positions opposite the venue, hours before the couple were due.
One family of six had camped in two tents on the concrete footpaths since midnight.
With a gas stove for heating water for their hot water bottles, they looked well-settled and happy with their position as the crowds gathered around them.
“We got woken at 3 a.m. by the press people setting up and I heard police dogs at 4 a.m.,” said Gwen Murray, from Norfolk.
“It was cold and noisy.”
Surrounded by her daughters and two granddaughters, she said: “It’s so easy just to sit and watch it on TV, but we wanted to be parted of it.”
A veteran of royal events, she had camped for three nights for Charles and Diana’s wedding – “it was summer then and a lot warmer” – Princess Anne’s and the Duke York’s as well as the Queen’s Mother’s 101st birthday.
