2.2 System of exercises for teaching listening
As a result of the study and study of the experience of methodologists who dealt with this problem, the following system of exercises was developed for teaching listening at the initial stage. The system includes preparatory exercises for recognizing phonetic units, preparatory exercises for recognizing lexical units, preparatory exercises for developing probabilistic forecasting skills, exercises for recognizing grammatical phenomena, speech exercises performed during listening, speech exercises performed after listening to the text.
I. _ Preparatory exercises for recognition of phonetic units:
1. Listen to the sounds and identify (give a sign, raise your hand, show a card, etc.) VOICES and CONSONANTS:
[ r ], [ a :], [ h ], [ t ], [ m ], [?], [ u ], [ i :], [^], etc .
2. Listen to consonant sounds and identify VOICED and VOICED consonants;
[d], [s], [r], [t], [m], [r], [z], [g], etc.
3. Listen to the sounds and identify SIMILAR to the sounds of the Russian language and DIFFERENT from them;
[m], [u], [w], [k], [v], [ ? ], [f], [3:], [b], etc.
4. Listen to vowel sounds and identify LONG and SHORT;
5. Listen to the words and identify vowels in them
[ a :], [^], [ ? ] in the words Bad , farm , duck , car , black , fat , man , jump ...
[ o : ], [ o ] in horse, dog, block, corner, daughter, stop ...
[3:], [o:] in bird, form, fork, turn, third....
6. Listen to the words and recognize consonant sounds in them
[ w], [v] - when, white, twenty, seven, eleven... and others .
· Mark cells according to the sound heard (Listen and tick (+), then listen again and repeat).

7. Listen to the words and recognize diphthongs that sound similar in them:
[ou]-[au]; [ei] - [ai]; '
house, rose, nose, blouse, play, nice, face, I, my etc.
8. Listen to the word and determine the number of syllables:
dog, doctor, farmer, cunning, bicycle, fat, etc.
9. Listen to the word and identify the syllable under stress (with and without visual support), pronounce this syllable and this word:
Ugly, cunning, doctor, tomato, farmer, beautiful, potato, November, etc.
10. Exercise for physical education:
- listen to the word and raise your hands (jump, tilt, etc.) if you hear the sound [n] (or any other sound) in the word named by the teacher, sit down if there is no such sound;
11. Listen to the words and determine what sound the word ends with [d] or [t]:
stopped , played, worked, opened...( with visual support )
Mark the cells according to the sound you hear
(Listen and tick (+), then listen again and repeat).

12. Listen and mark nouns that have plural endings:
Monkeys , pigs , hen , boy , farms , trousers , skirt , shoes etc .
13. Mark the cells according to the sound you hear . (Listen and tick (+), then listen again and repeat.)

II . Preparatory exercises for the recognition of lexical units
1. Listen to the word and show the corresponding picture (food, animals, activities, sports, objects of different colors, etc.)
2. Listen to commands - verbs and show, perform these actions;
Stand up, jump, fly, wash your face, play tennis, etc
3. Listen to the sentences and color the object in the appropriate color:
The lamp is yellow
The cat is black
The dog is black . Etc
4. Listen to (one) or a series of adjectives and name a word that can be used with them:
Big, high, nice, new house
Blue, nice, short dress
Brave, strong, young boy
5. Listen to a phrase or a short sentence and name the situation in which they can be used:
Would you like some tea? hello; nice to meet you; no thank you; etc
6. Listen to a set of individual words and build a sentence out of them:
The forest, monkey, live, in. - Monkey lives in the fores
Monday, football, on, play, they. - They play football on Monday
7. Listen to 2-3 short phrases and build a sentence out of them:
To play the piano, would like, he. - He would like to play the piano.
8. Listen to the request and fulfill it if there is a word “please”:
9. Listen to the story and determine on whose behalf it can sound:
I am big and strong. I am brown. I live in the forest. I like honey. ( A bear).
10. Listen to the names of the products and name the dish that can be prepared from them:
With abbage, carrot, oil, salt - salad.
Potato, meat, cabbage, water, salt - soup.
11. Listen to the words and name the probable following:
Apple, big, cat, dog, egg........ fat (according to alphabetical order)
12. Listen to the words and place their numbers in the houses according to the meaning:
1. kitchen, 2. map, 3. bathroom, 4. teacher, 5. bed, 6. grandfather etc.

III . Preparatory exercises for the development of probabilistic forecasting skills:
1. Listen to a set of words and mark the numbers of those that are suitable for the named topic:
Topic “Sh about pping”
1) dress 2) soup 3) grandfather 4) department 5) cash 6) credit-card 7) kitchen etc. (words No. 1,4,5,6)
2. Listen to a group of words and name their topic:
Blue, red, yellow , brown, black, green ... Colors
Butter, fish, bread, egg, honey, chips ... Food (food)
3. Listen to the beginning of the word and pronounce it completely, finish it:
Beauti... ful, eleph... ant, interes... ting, marme... lade, mush... room etc.
4. Listen to the title of the story and guess what will be discussed.
“The best day of the year”,
"The boy and the dog"
“Flowers for my mother”, etc.
5. Listen to the phrase and add to it one more, related in meaning:
Look at this boy. .... He is my friend. Or His name is Dick.
(this way you can make a story)
6. Listen to the beginning of the sentence and finish it, based on the meaning of unions or allied words.
He is at home now, because... ( he is ill ).
7. Listen to the keywords and predict the idea, theme, plot:
A boy, ten, Africa, friend, monkey, play, swim, etc.
8. Using pictures, photographs, diagrams, tables, predict a possible plot, topic. (Warm up activity)
9. Build an associogram (cluster) on the topic of the text to be listened to. For example: the theme is “ Olympic games ”
