Introduction
 
We all have reading skills in L1 (our mother tongue) but sometimes it is difficult to translate
them into L2 (foreign language). 
Students tend to ​
abandon most of these reading skills they take for granted in their mother
 
tongue, and often get frustrated when they come across unknown or difficult words, instead
of using a mixture of micro-skills to help them understand the text.
As a teacher, you will have to raise your students’ awareness about the fact that reading is a
skill, and it is possible to become a better and more effective reader in a foreign language. 
In this unit, you will... 
●
listen to four students in order to find out what they read and examine the
difficulties​ students may experience when reading a foreign language; 
●
analyse ​different reading skills and explore ways of ​developing students’ reading
 
 
 
 
 
skills; 
●
watch a reading skills lesson taught by an experienced teacher, Hedi, who will

 
 
demonstrate the​ framework ​of a reading lesson; 
●
listen to two other experienced teachers, Leah and Steve, who will share some more
reading lesson ideas with you, suggesting a ​variety of ​tasks you could use in your
 
own teaching; 
●
consider​ ​effective​ and ineffective reading​ comprehension questions. 
We will help you understand the ​principles behind the staging ​of a reading skills lesson and
 
 
 

anticipate problems you may have with teaching such a lesson; we will also give you some
 
tips ​on ​how to make sure your lesson is successful​ and enjoyable.
