Team facts: Lokomotiv Moskva After picking up a solitary point from their opening two fixtures, FC Lokomotiv Moskva will be looking to drag themselves back into contention in UEFA Cup Group B when they welcome a Brøndby IF side hoping to build on their opening win against Maccabi Petach-Tikva FC. • Lokomotiv are not only seeking their first win, but also their first goal of the group stage, after following up their opening 1-0 defeat by RCD Espanyol with a goalless draw at US Citta di Palermo. It is in stark contrast to the five goals they racked up against Norwegian club SK Brann in the first round and they will be looking to rediscover that form against another Scandinavian outfit, Brøndby. • This will be the first meeting between the clubs in UEFA club competition, but both sides have fond memories of their previous solitary encounters with outfits from their opponents' country. • Lokomotiv played Lyngby FC in the first round of the 1999/00 UEFA Cup and were victorious in both legs. The Russian side were always in control, after first-half goals from Igor Chugainov and Dmitri Bulykin set them on course for a 2-1 win in the first leg in Denmark. They then ran away with the tie in the return match, Evgueni Kharlachev, Yuri Drozdov and Zaza Janashia all scoring to secure a 5-1 aggregate victory. • Brøndby's finest hour in UEFA club competition came in the 1990/91 UEFA Cup. The Danish team reached the semi-finals, where they were narrowly beaten by AS Roma. They met Russian side FC Torpedo Moskva in the quarter-finals of that run - a thrilling tie decided only after a penalty shoot-out. • Brøndby edged the first leg 1-0 thanks to Jens Christian Madsen’s goal just before the hour mark, and the Danes looked on course to win in regulation time in the second leg in Russia, before Oleg Shirinbekov scored with just three minutes remaining to take the tie into extra time. Brøndby regrouped and triumphed 4-2 on penalties, midfield talisman Kim Vilfort scoring the decisive spot-kick. • Lokomotiv Moskva missed out on European competition last season, ending a nine- year run of qualification. • The Russian club made their first appearance in UEFA competition in the 1993/94 UEFA Cup and have only failed to qualify on two subsequent occasions: 1994/95 and 2004/05. They have therefore been involved in UEFA competition in eleven of the last 13 seasons.

• Having missed out last season on qualification for Europe, Lokomotiv's last participation in UEFA competition came in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League where they defeated FC Shakhtar Donetsk 3-2 in the third qualifying round to book their place in the group stage. Drawn with FC Dynamo Kyiv, Arsenal FC and FC Internazionale Milano, Lokomotiv finished second in the group and advanced to the knockout stages for the first time only to lose on away goals to AS Monaco FC after the sides shared four goals. Lokomotiv won 2-1 at home thanks to goals from Marat Izmailov and Vladimir Maminov, only for Fernando Morientes to halve the deficit before the end. It was to prove crucial as Monaco prevailed 1-0 in the Principality to advance with Dado Pršo scoring the only goal of the game. • During the 2002/03 season, Lokomotiv also advanced to the second group stage of the UEFA Champions League although the closest they have come to a UEFA final to date came in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. • Lokomotiv competed in the 1997/98 Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals against VfB Stuttgart, only to lose 3-1 on aggregate. Zaza Janashia put Lokomotiv ahead in the opening leg in Stuttgart only for Jonathan Akpoborie and Fredi Bobic to reply for the home side. Bobic was the only name on the scoresheet in the return as Stuttgart emerged victorious from their engagement in Moscow. Earlier in the competition, Lokomotiv accounted for FC Belshina Bobruisk, Kocaelisopr and AEK Athens FC. • The following season and in the same competition, Lokomotiv were again in the last four. On this occasion, S.S. Lazio provided the opposition and again Lokomotiv lost out, this time on away goals. The two sides drew 1-1 in the opening leg in Moscow with Janashia again putting the Russian side ahead only for Alen Bokši ć to equalise for the visitors. The tie remained scoreless in Rome, allowing Lazio to book their place in the final. Lokomotiv defeated FC CSCA Kyiv, SC Braga and Maccabi Haifa FC to take their chance, only to come up short once more. • Russian PremierLiga champions, Lokomotiv started this season's UEFA competition in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League where they defeated FK Rabotnicki 31 on aggregate. The two sides shared a 11 draw in Skopje with Lokomotiv's blushes spared by Dmitri Sychev's 90thminute equaliser after Ardijan Nuhiji had given the Macedonian champions an early lead. Lokomotiv won the return leg 20 in the Russian capital, although they had to wait 75 minutes for Sychev to break the deadlock before Malkhaz Asatiani added a second five minutes from time. • Tougher opposition lay ahead in the third qualifying round and though Lokomotiv had reason to be confident following their 11 draw in Vienna against SK Rapid Wien, they were unable to break the deadlock in the return leg in Moscow, ultimately suffering a fatal blow six minutes from time when Rapid scored through Jozef Valachović. Aleksandr Samedov (9) had opened the scoring for Lokomotiv in Vienna before Valachović (75pen) equalised for the home side. • That defeat meant that Lokomotiv were back in the UEFA Cup for the first time since the 2001/02 season. This time round, the Russian champions accounted for Norwegian side SK Brann in the first round, winning 53 on aggregate. They won the opening leg 2

Team facts: Brøndby 1 in Bergen after falling a goal behind on the stroke of halftime with Francesco Ruopolo (71) and Igor Lebedenko (77) on target. Brann took the lead twice in Moscow as Lokomotiv again left it late, but Dmitri Loskov (61), Asatiani (77) and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov (90+1) salvaged the situation. • Raúl Tamudo scored the only goal as RCD Espanyol got their 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage campaign off to an impressive start against Lokomotiv in the Russian capital. The Spanish international broke the deadlock eight minutes after the restart, pouncing on a fine throughball and applying a clinical finish. The strike came against the run of play but for all Lokomotiv’s possession, they were unable to muster a shot to test Espanyol's redundant goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz. • Lokomotiv got their challenge back on track by securing a scoreless draw away to Italian side US Città di Palermo on Matchday 2 of this season's group stage. But the Russian side had to dig deep for a share of the spoils after Dmitri Khokhlov's 80th minute dismissal. • Prior to Matchday 3 of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage, Lokomotiv Moskva had played 81 matches in UEFA club competition with 32 wins, 16 draws, 33 losses, 102 goals scored and 97 conceded. • Brøndby are making their 13th consecutive appearance in UEFA club competitions. • The Danish club made their first appearance in the 1986/87 European Champion Clubs’ Cup and since then have only failed to qualify for a UEFA competition once, namely the 1992/93 season. This season is their 18th appearance in UEFA club competitions. • Brøndby’s participation in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup was shortlived as they entered and exited the competition at the second qualifying round stage. The Danish side lost on away goals to Latvian side FK Ventspils after the sides shared a 11 aggregate draw. • Brøndby’s furthest foray into a UEFA club competition came in the 1990/91 season when they reached the last four of the UEFA Cup before losing out to AS Roma 21 on aggregate. All the goals came in the first leg in Italy where Ruggiero Rizzitelli gave the home side the lead after 33 minutes only for Sebastiano Nela to put the ball through his own net in the 65th minute to provide Brøndby with an unexpected away goal. But Roma took the lead again two minutes from time through Rudi Völler and then advanced to the final following a scoreless draw in the return leg. • They also played in the group stage of the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League having been drawn with FC Bayern München, Manchester United FC and FC Barcelona. The Danes beat Bayern 21 in their opening match with two goals in the last three minutes only to lose the other five matches in the group. • The Danish side won their national championship by eight points from FC København, FC Lokomotiv Moskva v Brøndby IF PRESS KIT uefa.com 3/17
thereby entering the UEFA Champions League at the second qualifying round stage where they encountered Georgian champions, FC Dinamo Tbilisi. • Secondhalf strikes from Morten Skoubo (59) and Johan Elmander (83) gave Brøndby a precious 20 away win against tenman Dinamo in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie. The Danes’ task was made easier by the dismissal of Dinamo defender Aleksandr Amisulashvili for a second bookable offence shortly before the interval. The return leg was similarly straightforward for Brøndby for whom Kasper Lorentzen (9, 42) and Jonas Kamper (86) were on the scoresheet in a 31 win. • AFC Ajax eventually denied Brøndby a place in the group stage of the competition as they lost 53 on aggregate to the Dutch side. • An addedtime own goal from Julien Escudé had given Brøndby some hope of overhauling Ajax as the two sides shared four goals in Denmark. Ajax had taken the lead in through Markus Rosenberg on the half hour, but Morten Skoubo equalised within three minutes. The visitors again went ahead through Ryan Babel after 73 minutes before Escudé’s unfortunate intervention at the end of the game. • Brøndby then stunned the Dutch side in Amsterdam in the return when Johan Elmander gave the visitors the lead on the cusp of halftime. But the advantage was shortlived and Ryan Babel equalised five minutes after the restart before a late double from substitute Wesley Sneijder (80, 89) confirmed Ajax’s place in the UEFA Champions League group stage at Brøndby’s expense. • Having missed out on the opportunity of UEFA Champions League football, Brøndby’s attentions transferred to the UEFA Cup where they faced Swiss side FC Zürich in the first round. The Danes won 20 at home thanks to second half goals from Morten Skoubo (46) and Dan Anton Johansen (72). Their opponents then took the lead in the return leg through Rafael Araujo (15), but Brøndby scored a crucial away goal through Johan Elmander three minutes before the interval. Although Rafael added a second in the 80thminute for the home side, Brøndby held on to book their place in the group stage of the competition. • The Danish side got their group stage campaign off to a winning start in their opening game at the expense of Maccabi PetachTikva FC on Matchday 2. Secondhalf goals from Marcus Lantz (67) and substitute Johan Absalonsen (83) secured the spoils for the Danish champions while their opponents suffered a second successive defeat, a result that leaves them rooted to the bottom of the section. • Prior to Matchday 3 of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage, Brøndby had played 111 matches in UEFA club competitions.

Brøndby bear down on Danish summit (Monday, 21 November 2005) Domestic news Brøndby IF earned a narrow home win to stay in touch at the top of the Danish Superleague, but UEFA Cup Group B rivals FC Lokomotiv Moskva's domestic season ended in severe disappointment after they were held to a costly 1-1 derby draw. US Città di Palermo and Maccabi Petach-Tikva FC also had to settle for points, but there was joy for RCD Espanyol, who climbed away from relegation danger. FC Lokomotiv Moskva 1-1 FC Spartak Moskva Long-time leaders Lokomotiv experienced a demoralising finale to their Russian Premier League campaign on Saturday after a derby draw meant they were edged out by opponents Spartak in the race for second place and a UEFA Champions League berth. Vladimir Eshtrekov's team, for whom Georgian striker Georgi Chelidze made his debut, fell behind just after the hour and equalised through Malkhaz Asatiani with five minutes remaining to set up a grandstand finish, but a second strike proved elusive and they will be back in the UEFA Cup for 2006/07. "We've lost and that's it. This season is ruined - we did not qualify for the Champions League, third place is not a result for Lokomotiv," was midfield player Dmitri Khokhlov's stark assessment. The repercussions could yet impact their UEFA Cup for this season aspirations after Marat Izmailov limped off after 15 minutes, to join long-term absentees Dmitri Sychev and Vladimir Maminov on the sidelines, although his ankle injury may yet heal in time. Francisco Lima is rated doubtful for Thursday's match against Brøndby and André Stéphane Bikey could deputise again, while Dmitri Loskov is likely to start after shaking off a back problem. Brøndby IF 1-0 Viborg FF Brøndby maintained their pursuit of FC København at the top of the Danish Superleague with a narrow home win against the side immediately below them, Viborg, cutting the gap to four points. The second-placed hosts welcomed back forward Morten Skoubo after a six-week lay-off with a groin injury, and the 25-year-old forward quickly reminded everyone what they had been missing with his eighth goal in nine league starts this season, heading what proved to by the winner in the 34th minute of an intense encounter. "It was more fight and hard work than good football that gave us this win, but it was positive to see that we can also manage this way of playing, as this is the style we have to adjust to," said Brøndby coach Michael Laudrup. "The way the pitches are in northern Europe at this time of the year you simply cannot have five or six successful passes in a row."
Espanyol coach Miguel Ángel Lotina and goalkeeper Idriss Kaméni celebrated their 50th matches at the club in style as the team climbed out of the relegation zone with a home

win against Mallorca on Sunday. Raúl Tamudo scored a penalty in the 39th minute, his first league goal of the season, before Luis García doubled the advantage two minutes later. The win was only Espanyol's third in the Primera División and their first since a 1- 0 victory against Real Madrid CF on 18 September. A trio of players missed the game through injury - Mauricio Pochettino (sinusitis), Armando Sá (groin) and Martín Posse (calf) - although defender Albert Lopo did return after calf and ankle problems. Lotina said: "Mallorca attacked well, but our team was organised and defended well. The key to the match was the second goal but we have to carry on improving. We are lucky that the crowd is backing us, so now we have to work hard and move up the table, shedding the tension." Treviso FC 2-2 US Città di Palermo Palermo recovered after going two goals down inside the opening six minutes to salvage a share of the spoils at the Stadio Tenni on Sunday. Michele Ferri (28) and Franco Brienza (69) were both on target after Reginaldo's early double as Palermo coach Luigi Del Neri was left to question his decision to switch to an attacking 3-4-1-2 formation, with attack-minded midfielder Bienza playing behind strikers Andrea Caracciolo and Stephan Makinwa. Del Neri, who was without Cristian Terlizzi, Salvatore Masiello, Mario Alberto Santana and Simone Pepe with muscular injuries, said: "I'm pleased about today's performance, if not the result. My players once again proved that they're a really good team: they know what they want and they know how to get it."
Maccabi stretched their winless league run to seven matches with a goalless draw at home against second-placed Beni Yehuda. The home side, who slipped to ninth in the Israeli Premier League, dominated much of the proceedings and were denied by an impressive display from visiting goalkeeper Vincent Aniema while Bnei Yehuda ended the match with ten men following the dismissal of Kobi Dajani in the final minute. Lokembo Lokaso returned to the heart of the Maccabi midfield in place of Shay Banay, while Ismael Amar came in at right-back following a one-match suspension, and Stanislav Dubrovin replaced Shay David for the final 34 minutes after recovering from a hamstring injury. Coach Guy Luzon said: "In comparison to previous weeks, today we returned to being Maccabi Petach-Tikva. We dominated the match and should have won but after [four games] I am delighted that we managed to keep a clean sheet." FC Lokomotiv Moskva v Brøndby IF PRESS KIT uefa.com 14/17
