ABSTRACT

Figure 1: Challenges presently encountered in applications of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
The primary issues within the broader scope of IoT revolve primarily around privacy, identity management, and security [29]. Standardization and system interoperability are also identified as significant challenges due to the extensive interconnection of devices. The integration of components on a system level makes data storage and data representation critical elements in guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS). Lastly, the network layer holds paramount importance in industrial IoT applications, necessitating ongoing maintenance and management to ensure the best possible QoS.

Overview of the System and Its Implementation. The proposal introduces a monitoring system designed to oversee the communication system's performance, specifically in identifying variations in communication quality between the physical and data layers. The primary aim of this solution is to identify network layer issues within intricate industrial IoT applications.
To achieve this, the implementation involves the deployment of a remote server and a mobile communication router within an industrial facility. This configuration establishes a connection between the facility and the internet, enabling the execution of IoT applications such as remote monitoring and maintenance. Figure 2 presents a conceptual representation of remote facilities interconnected through an existing mobile communications network.
The connection itself is enabled through the utilization of mobile communication routers, facilitating the wireless transmission of vital data across considerable distances. However, it is important to note that the system relies on third-party mobile communications networks over which the facility lacks control.
Subsystem 1 holds the utmost significance within the system's framework. It comprises software routines actively overseeing the critical aspects of network equipment, particularly GSM routers utilized for machine-to-machine communication. These crucial aspects encompass monitoring communication uplink status, current mobile data availability, and signal strength, all of which are integral components of this subsystem.
Subsystem 2 primarily concentrates on storing the data collected in Subsystem 1. It features a relational database meticulously devised for seamless data storage. Additionally, the system can retrieve data in real-time, necessitating the integration of real-time storage mechanisms. Furthermore, the system computes daily averages, mandating the incorporation of daily average storage schemes into its design.
Subsystem 3 encompasses the graphical user interface (GUI) alongside event logging capabilities. The proposed monitoring system offers real-time data display via a specially crafted GUI, enabling end-users to access information promptly. This interface furnishes real-time updates on connection uplink status, current mobile data usage, signal strength, and other pertinent details like remote end-point IP addresses. In the realm of industrial IoT applications, most rely on M2M protocols to facilitate data exchange between offices and remote sites. To ensure secure communication between remote and receiving end-points, the system employs a private access point name (APN) or virtual private network (VPN). The utilization of an APN assigns each remote end-point a unique internet protocol (IP) address [37], thus facilitating effective communication through mobile routers.
Hence, the proposed system's core purpose lies in monitoring communication between a mobile communication router and an existing cloud infrastructure. It assumes responsibility for overseeing the uplink connection between remote industrial sites and the receiving end-point for data transmission.
