When was the story published? And when was it set?
It was first published in the March 1843 edition of The Pioneer and later appeared in Mosses from an Old Manse, a collection of Hawthorne's short stories published in 1846. "The Birthmark" takes place in the late 1700s at an unidentified location in Britain, in the home and laboratory of the fictional scientist Aylmer.

Describe these two places: Bedroom and Lab room
The bedroom is a room richly decorated with curtains and lamps emitting different hues of light. By some trick of his scientific skill, Aylmer causes airy figures to dance over and bewitch her.
The laboratory is a room with furnace blazing to effect distillation of a liquid. There are also tubes, crucibles, an electrical machine, and other laboratory devices. The room, which is very warm, has bare walls and a brick floor.
