DANWEN XING

 

 

 

Xing Danwen, born in Xi'an, China, is an independent artist now based in BeijingChina. As a  teenager, she had 

already taken a four-year professional study in painting at the primary art school affiliated with the Xi'an Academy 

of Fine Arts. From 1989 to to992, she continued painting and did her BFA at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 

Beijing. In the late 80s, she started photography, becoming one of a few artists in the late 80s and 90s in China who 

explored the boundaries of photography and used photography as an art form. In 1998, she went to New York with 

a  grant  and  fellowship from  the  Asian  Cultural  Council.  From  1998 to2001,  she  did  her  MFA  at  the  School  of 

Visual  Arts  in  New  York.  Xing  Danwen  exhibits  domestically  and  internationally,  including  at  the  Whitney 

Museum of American Art, Pompidou Center, International Center for Photography, Victoria and

 

 

Albert Museum, 1st Yokohama Triennale and Sydney Biennale 2004. Her artistic practice is both rich and varied and her subjects include: 

dislocation  between  cultural  status,  conflicts  between  globalization  and  traditions,  and  problematic  environmental  issues  created  by 

development.

 

 

 

KEIKO YAMAMOTO

 

 

 

Keiko Yamamoto is a journalist who joined NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), in 1995 after receiving her 

M.A. in International Development from Nagoya University, Japan. She has covered educational and social issues 

including  decreasing  birthrates,  gender  inequality,  and  economic  disparities  in  Japan.  Keiko  founded  a  female 

journalist's association in 2001 wishing to create a professional network among female journalists in the country. 

There are now two chapters, one in Tokyo and one in Nagoya, with current membership of over 250. Today, the 

network  has  worked  to  introduce  and  foster  such  new  concepts  to  Japanese  society  as  the  work-life  balance, 

diversity and supporting non-profit organizations through the positive use of media.

 

 

 

 

ZHEYU YANG

 

 

Zheyu Yang is the Deputy Chief of the Research Department of Caijing Magazine, a leading periodical in China 

famous for its courage to reveal scandals and support  modernization in the country. Previously, he worked at the 

official  Xinhua  News  Agency.  He  is  mainly  in  charge  of  drafting  the  editorials  of the  magazine,  some  of  which 

received the Award of The National Best Editorial, such as "the public anticipation of the 17th national congress of 

CPC," which demand for speeding up democratization.

AYNABAT YAYLYMOVA

 

 

Aynabat Yaylymova is Project Manager at the Bank Information Center based in Washington, DC. The project aims 

to strengthen the capacity of civil society groups in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in understanding and influencing 

International Financial Institutions' involvement in the hydropower sector. Aynabat is a co-founder of the Central 

Asia  Educational  Fund  (CAEF)  where  she  initiated  and  managed  educational  and  public  health  projects  in  the 

Central  Asia  region.  In  2006-2008,  she  worked  as  the  Central  Eurasian  Leadership  Academy  (CELA)  Project 

Manager. CELA works to enhance leadership skills in Central Asia and the Caucasus and to form an international 

network of leaders working toward improved regional cooperation. In Turkmenistan, Aynabat co-

 

 

founded and led the Alliance for Responsible Community Action (ARCA), an organization dedicated to promoting civic education in 

Turkmenistan. She is an alumna of the first Central Eurasia Leadership Academy.

 

 

 

RUTH YEOH

 

 

Ruth  Yeoh  is  Director  at  Yeoh  Tiong  Lay  &  Sons  Holdings  Sdn  Bhd  and  Director  of  Investments  at  YTL 

Corporation Bhd. She is also a Director at YTL-SV Carbon, YTL's in-house carbon credit and Clean Development 

Mechanism (CDM) consultancy. Ruth currently leads the environmental division at YTL, where she reports on her 

organization’s environmental activities through writing its award-winning Sustainability Reports, published yearly. 

Ruth also pioneered the highly successful "Climate Change Week," YTL's flagship educational campaign designed 

to raise awareness on the important issue of climate change in her nation of Malaysia and globally. She is a member 

of the Institute of Corporate Responsibility Malaysia (ICRM) and is an investment committee member of both the 

Asian Renewable Energy and Environment Fund (AREEF) and

 

 

Renewable Energy and Environment Fund (REEF), investing in clean technology and renewable energy. Ruth was appointed youngest 

Board  Member  of  Rare  Conservation  in  2008,  with  responsibilities  in  the  Governance  Committee  of  this  US-based  conservation 

organization. She is also a Board Member at Reef Check Malaysia, dedicated to protecting reefs and coral life in Malaysia and the Southeast 

Asian region. She was previously attached with Credit Suisse, Singapore, where she was responsible for research into equities, renewable 

energy markets, commodities, clean technology, investments and the author of several flagship publications. In addition, she has written 

for both the Wall Street Journal Asia and Financial Times, and has authored and co-edited a book on climate change entitled

 

 

Cut Carbon, Grow Profits: Business Strategies for Managing Climate Change and Sustainability. Ruth graduated with a degree (Hons) 

from the University of Nottingham UK and an MS (Distinction) from Cass Business School in the City of London.

 

 

 

TRICIA YEOH

 

 

Tricia Yeoh is the Policy Research Officer for the Selangor Chief Minister, Malaysia. Previously, she was Director 

of the Centre for Public Policy Studies at the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) based in Kuala Lumpur. 

She is currently affiliated with the Selangor State Government as Policy Research Officer for the Selangor Chief 

Minister. She was previously Regional Coordinator for Asia Pacific at the Revenue Watch Institute. She has given 

international public presentations and her comments as a Malaysian policy and political analyst have appeared in 

the Economist, the International Herald Tribune and the New York Times. She is an alumna of the prestigious US 

State International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). She is qualified in econometrics and has a Master of Science 

in Research Methodology in Psychology.

 

 

 

JINGJING ZHANG

 

 

Jingjin Zhang is the Deputy Director of the Public Interest Law Institute of the National Resources Defense Council. 

As one of China’s leading public interest lawyers, she is committed to justice and strengthening the rule of law. An 

outspoken environmental advocate, she represents pollution victims in lawsuits and promotes public participation 

by helping communities organize public hearings on environmental rights and licensing processes. She  has won 

milestone cases in the Chinese courts, including the first successful environmental class action suit in China, against 

a chemical  company  that  discharged  toxic  substances in  Fujian Province.  In  a  landmark  suit against  the  Beijing 

Municipal Commission of Urban Planning and the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau, after the first-ever 

public  hearing  related  to  environment  issue,  Zhang  represented  the  community  to  sue  the  two  governmental 

agencies, eventually becoming a landmark environmental case. She has been frequently featured in

 

 

the media for her pioneering work in public interest law. She was the Yale world fellow and visiting scholar at Yale Law School China 

Law Center and Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars from 2008-2009 and is the deputy director of Public Interest Law

MIKE TAO ZHANG

 

 

Mike  Tao  Zhang  is  the  Executive  Vice  President  of  the  US-China  Green  Energy  Council  (UCGEC, 

http://ucgef.org/). The UCGEC is a leading non-profit organization with its headquarters in Silicon Valley and 

satellite  operations  in  Beijing,  Shanghai,  Suzhou,  Hong  Kong,  Washington,  DC,  and  Los  Angeles.  Mike 

dedicates himself to facilitating clean tech collaborations between the world's two largest carbon emitters – the 

US and China – in the overall goal of achieving sustainability. Prior to that, Mike worked for Spansion and Intel 

in  various  managerial/executive  capacities  and  has  assumed  leadership  roles  in  the  organization  of  many 

international conferences. He is currently the Co-Chair of an IEEE Technical Committee, and the recipient of 

some  prestigious  awards,  including  the  Li  Foundation  Heritage  Prize  for  Outstanding  Achievement,  the  IIE 

Outstanding Young Industrial Engineer Business/Industry Award, and the IEEE Robotics and Automation

 

 

Early  Career  Industry/Government  Award.  Mike  received  his  MS  and  the  PhD  degrees,  as  well  as  the  Management  of  Technology 

certificate  from  the  Haas  School  of  Business  and  the  College  of  Engineering,  all  at  the  University  of  California,  Berkeley,  in  record-

breaking three years. In his spare time, Mike enjoys volunteering at local charities and community services.

 

 

 

MIN ZIN

 

 

Min  Zin  is  a  freelance  journalist  and  instructor  at  the  School  of  Journalism  of  the  University  of  California, 

Berkeley. He got involved in student activism early in his life when in 1988, as a 14-year-old high school student, 

a  pro-democracy  movement  swept  through  Burma.  He  founded  a  nationwide  high  school  student  union  and 

worked closely with pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. He went into hiding in 1989 to avoid arrest by 

the  military,  and  his  underground  activist-cum-  writer  life  lasted  for nine  years  until  he  fled  across  the  Thai-

Burma border in August 1997. Almost all of his family members in Burma have suffered from repressions,

 

 

including imprisonment and harassment at the hands of the military junta. His brother Thet Zin, a journalist and former political prisoner, 

is now serving a seven-year prison term in Burma for exercising freedom of expression. Min Zin worked for the Thailand-based Irrawaddy 

magazine, as an assistant editor. Shifting from print to radio journalism, from 2004 to 2007, Min worked for the Washington-based Radio 

Free  Asia  (Burmese  Service).  He  is  currently  pursuing  his  MA  degree  in  the  Asian  Studies  Graduate  Program  at  the  University  of 

California, Berkeley. He is also an instructor responsible for International Visiting Scholars' Program at the University of  California at 

Berkeley's  School  of  Journalism.  He  is  a  freelance  journalist  writing  for  the  Wall  Street  Journal,  Far  Eastern  Economic  Review,  The 

Bangkok Post, The Irrawaddy and other publications.

 

 

 

SOOFIAN ZUBERI

 

 

 

Soofian Zuberi is a Managing Director and the Head of Global Markets Sales for Asia at Bank of America Merrill 

Lynch. Soofian joined Merrill Lynch in 1993 as a member of the New York Corporate Finance team. From there, 

he transferred to Hong Kong where he  has held a number of increasingly senior roles including Head of Asia 

Equity  Syndicate  and  Head  of  South  East  Asia  Equity  Capital  Markets  before  being  promoted  to  his  current 

position  in  2006.  Soofian  has  worked  on  over  130  transactions  and  raised  over  US$90  billion  across  equity, 

structured equity and convertible bonds for both corporate and sovereign clients in Asia. Soofian is based in Hong
