The Problem of the Aral Sea

The Aral Sea is one of the enviromental disasters of the world.

• The Aral Sea is gradually shrinking & drying up.
• The sea has now divided into 2 smaller seas , shortly to be 3.
• Fed by two rivers , the Amu Darya and Syr Darya
• The eastern basin is now called the Aralkum desert.

Possible environmental solutions.

• Many different solutions to the different problems have been suggested over the years , varying in feasibility and cost , including:
• Improving the quality of irrigation canals.
• Installing desalination plants.
• Charging farmers to use the water from the rivers.
• Using fewer chemicals on the cotton.
• Moving farming away from cotton.
• Installing dams to fill the Aral Sea.

• Because there was too much salt in the water it began killing the plants and animals.
• All 20 species of fish that once lived in the Sea are now extinct.
• As the marine life died the fishing industry suffered.
• The once thriving fishing industry employing roughly 60,000 people in the early 1960s has been destroyed.
