The Problem of the Aral Sea
The Aral Sea is one of the enviromental disasters of the world.
Possible environmental solutions.
- Many different solutions to the different problems have been suggested over the years , varying in feasibility and cost , including:
- Improving the quality of irrigation canals.
- Installing desalination plants.
- Charging farmers to use the water from the rivers.
- Using fewer chemicals on the cotton.
- Moving farming away from cotton.
- Installing dams to fill the Aral Sea.
- Because there was too much salt in the water it began killing the plants and animals.
- All 20 species of fish that once lived in the Sea are now extinct.
- As the marine life died the fishing industry suffered.
- The once thriving fishing industry employing roughly 60,000 people in the early 1960s has been destroyed.
