- “it was a platinum fob chain simple and cheste in design, properly proclaiming its value by substance alone and not by meretricious ornamentation as all good things should. It was even worthy of the watch. As soon as she saw it she know that it must be Jim’s. It was like him. Quietness and value- the description applied to both. $21 they took from her for it and she hurried home with 87 cents. With that Chain on his watch he might be properly anxious about the time in any company

The universal themes of love, poverty, sacrifice, foolishness, and wisdom are dealt with handily even though the text itself is quite short. The final element that makes "The Gift of the Magi" memorable is O. Henry's adept use of irony, which provides two twists at the climax of the story
