HE SYSTEM OF EDUCATION IN G REAT B RITAIN 9 River Cam are known as the “Backs,” and together they form a unique combination of large-scale architecture, natural and formal gardens, and river scenery with student boaters. The university library with well over 3,000,000 volumes is one of a handful in the country that is entitled to a copy of every book published in Great Britain. Note- worthy collections include the Acton Library of medieval, ecclesiastical, and modern history, the W.G. Aston Japanese library, the papers of Charles Darwin, and the Wade Chinese collection. The Fitzwilliam Museum contains, among other things, important collections of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman antiquities; medieval and modern manuscripts; and paintings of European masters. Useful links. Read the text OXFORD, translate and retell it. OXFORD xford is an English autonomous institution of higher learning at Oxford, Oxfordshire, Eng. It lies along the Upper River Thames (called by Oxonians the Isis), 50 miles (80 km) north-northwest of London. Sketchy evidence indicates that schools existed at Oxford as soon as the early 12 th century. By the end of that century a university was well established, perhaps re- sulting from the barring of English students from the University of Paris about 1167. Oxford was modeled on the University of Paris, with initial faculties of theology, law, medicine, and the liberal arts. O |
