1Isaac Asimov and scientific fantastic fiction in American literature

CONCLUSIONS

For twenty years of work in the science fiction genre, Isaac Asimov wrote dozens of novels, short stories, short stories. They say that childhood hobbies are not in vain for a person in adulthood. So it happened with Asimov the science fiction writer. A childhood love of adventure fiction and detective stories left a mark on his work. "Establishment", "Steel Caves", "Naked Sun", "Currents in Space" are adventurous-detective novels and stories based on fantasy. However, the main direction in Asimov's work is not fantastic adventures, although even here he stands head and shoulders above many American science fiction writers. A truly original Asimov, Asimov the innovator, Asimov the sociologist and experimenter, opens in such magnificent cycles as "I, Robot", "Stars as Dust", "There is Enough Space on Earth" and in a grandiose and gloomy utopia,
If in Asimov's adventurous fantasy one can still find signs of social pessimism, attempts to transfer the sins and ulcers of modern humanity into the future - ferocious wars, tyrannies, colonialism dressed in space clothes, unscrupulousness and irresponsibility of politicians, fierce cruelty of generals, greed of businessmen whose arena of actions are galactic empires, then in his sociological fantasy, for all its grotesqueness and paradoxicality, we see modernity, capitalist reality, the moral, ethical and philosophical problems of humanity today. “For a person accustomed to looking at things from an American point of view,” Asimov once said, “an optimistic vision of modern society is unacceptable. I use fiction to criticize society. So do all other American science fiction writers in general. Most of all of his works, Asimov loves the story "The Ugly Boy". This is a story about how, during an experiment with a time machine, a Neanderthal boy came to our present. For a number of reasons, the boy had to be sent back, although one of the participants in the experiment, a female scientist, is very attached to him. The reader knows this story, and for him it is a novella filled with sadness and lyricism, built on a witty science fiction assumption. But Asimov himself appreciates this story for something completely different. He believes that the Neanderthal boy exists in reality, every society knows him. In America, this is a Negro, in other countries - someone else, an object of racial and national intolerance, when people readily hate a neighbor with a different complexion and a different nose shape.
Why, however, did one of the most prominent science fiction writers of our time suddenly leave science fiction? Why hasn't he published a single story, a single story since 1958? Why was he so captured by scientific popularization? Some narrow-minded critics were inclined to associate this with the beginning of the space age: they say, now there are no more topics for science fiction literature in the world. Asimov refutes this assertion. "Lunar flights have always been a favorite subject for science fiction writers," he said. - But will science fiction writers stop writing when such flights are made? We write about the future from the point of view of the present. Undoubtedly, new themes will be born after lunar flights. And yet “... it is true that after the launch of the first artificial satellite, I switched to the popularization of science ... I felt ashamed, that I have never yet responded in my books to the astonishing progress of science and technology. He gives another explanation: "Emotions, experiences are my weak point, I like to explain things and phenomena logically, and therefore such works turn out badly for me." Asimov is modest, but emotions and experiences really always occupied him very little, which is easy to see from his works. However, now he is still working on a new "space detective", although he admits that he is much more interested in the history of science. which is easy to see in his work. However, now he is still working on a new "space detective", although he admits that he is much more interested in the history of science. which is easy to see in his work. However, now he is still working on a new "space detective", although he admits that he is much more interested in the history of science.
