THE WINE ROUTE
This route of 133 kilometers, crosses lands dedicated to vines, already known by the
Romans in the lst century. Visitors can taste exquisite wines of Lower Mountain and
Upper River areas, both awarded the Denomination of Origin Navarre.
From winery to winery, one will see ancient places, such as Roman villas in Eslava
or Santacara, defensive towns like Gallipienzo, Aibar or Cáseda, hanging from hills
and mountains like San Martin de Unx, impressive centres of Christian faith such as
the Monastery of the Oliva or the Sanctuary of Santa María de Ujué or the beauty
of the city of Olite, where Middle Ages reached its peak in Navarre.
All this in a natural environment of strong contrasts, between the river and the
mountain, the Aragon and Cidacos rivers, or the Laguna de Pitillas, the second larg-
est and most important for its rich birdlife of Navarre.
