2. Thematization of the relationship between connotation and style.

The term “connotation” comes from lat. con – “together” and notatio – “designation”. As simple as the etymology of this term is, the range of divergence of views on the linguistic status, content and structure of the designated phenomenon is so wide. The fact that the linguistic content is not limited to pointing to one or another fragment of the world, but in many cases is capable of evoking various kinds of emotions, assessments, indicating that the speaker belongs to a certain social or territorial stratum, is noted in biblical texts: “... and they said Peter: Surely you also are one of them, for your speech also reproves you” (Matt. 26:73). The aspect of the content of linguistic facts, which goes beyond the limits of simple meaning, over time becomes the object of close attention of scientists from different linguistic schools and traditions. Ambiguous interpretations of the phenomenon of connotation lie, on the one hand, in the controversial history of the formation of the term, on the other hand, in the complexity of the phenomenon under discussion, in its dual nature, linguistic and extralinguistic at the same time. Modern concepts of connotation cannot be comprehended apart from the previous stages of its study. Consistent understanding of the stages of formation of the concept of "connotation" in linguistics allows us to understand the essence of this phenomenon, reveal the underlying mechanisms of the formation of its content and, to a large extent, determine the prospects for its research. The term “connotation” occurs in the XIV century.

In the treatise “Summa logicae” (1323/24) by the English philosopher W. Ockham, where he distinguishes between “absolute” and “connotative” names
In modern linguistics, most researchers either recognize the multicomponent nature of connotation, or associate connotation with one or another aspect, most often with associative-evaluative or stylistic.
