English: If you don’t know where to start, you can’t go wrong with a tour of Uzbekistan’s major historical attractions. Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and for good reason. Start with Samarkand, former home to some of the finest architects credited with creating the masterpieces of Registan Square and Gur-Emir Mausoleum. Bukhara is more intimate, with holy sites and historical landmarks around every corner. Khiva is an open-air museum that captures the exotic atmosphere of the Silk Road with its winding alleys and bustling bazaars. But don’t miss out on less famous yet equally impressive destinations like Termez, a Buddhist centre on the southern border, or Shahrisabz, birthplace of the great warrior Tamerlane.

English: For those who love textiles, ceramics, patterns and festive colours, Uzbekistan is as good as it gets. The Fergana Valley is famous for its artisans – potters at the Rishtan ceramics school and silk weavers in Margilan, among countless others. Samarkand has its own ceramics school, carpet weaving center and the famous Meros Paper Mill, which makes paper from mulberry bark using techniques passed down through the centuries. Bukhara is perhaps the best place to buy souvenirs, with a wide variety of top-quality crafts and gifts, while nimble woodcarvers can be seen hard at work in Tashkent and Khiva. Tours of these places are a great way to meet the artisans themselves and learn about the production of their famous creations using ancient techniques. In addition to arts and crafts, Uzbekistan preserves its rich cultural heritage in regular festivals, sporting events and everyday life. Cultural tourism offers tangible opportunities to participate in distinctive, time-honored Central Asian traditions. Read more about Cultural Tourism here.

There are a number of Uzbekistan holidays and festivals. The largest and liveliest ones feature some form of renewal, such as the New Year, curiously celebrated here by the largely Muslim population with a Christmas tree and a Santa. Each locality naturally has its own festivals, too. One worth seeing is the Boysun Spring Festival in Boysum, deemed by UNESCO to be a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Navruz
Another New Year celebration held all across Uzbekistan is the Navruz (also Navroz, Nowruz, and many other variations). The word ‘navruz’ means ‘new day’ in Iranian, so naturally Navruz is Iranian New Year. Held every March 21, Navruz is an auspicious event for many Uzbeks because it is at this time of year they pin hopes of revival and renewal. All over the country, families and local communities prepare sumptuous feasts for all to enjoy.

Boysun Bahori

Many local or provincial celebrations take place in various parts of Uzbekistan during spring. The biggest and perhaps the most culturally significant event is the Boysun Bahori, or the Boysun Spring Festival. Held in mountainous Boysun in Surkhandarya Province, this festival dates back to pre-Islam times and features costumes, songs, dance performances, storytelling, and other local traditions which have withstood the test of time. This event is so steeped in the region’s history and culture that UNESCO has named the Boysun cultural space as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Shark Taronalari

Shark Taronalari is Uzbekistan’s international world music festival. First held in 1997 in Samarkand, the festival has attracted a growing number of performers and participants through the years. It usually takes place every summer. Folk singers who practice traditional musical genres such as uran khai (throat singing) and makom (sacred classical, melodic Uzbek music) come to the festival to perform.

Independence Day

Independence Day, held every September 1, is the biggest national holiday as the entire country remembers the day when it gained its independence and sovereignty after a long era of Soviet occupation. Feasts and shows are held in many cities and towns, but it is in Alisher Navoiy National Park in Tashkent where the main event takes place. From this park, the president addresses the nation, after which performances from the country’s singers and actors take place, along with a large fireworks display.

New Year
Uzbeks have a particularly curious New Year festival called the Yillar. Traditions normally carried out during Christmas in other countries take place in Uzbekistan during the New Year. These traditions include putting up what is essentially a Christmas tree with lots of decorations. Uzbeks also exchange gifts during this time and at some feasts, a man in a Santa costume joins in the merriment.

O’zbekchasi: O‘zbekistonda qator bayram va bayramlar bor. Eng katta va eng jonlilari yangilanishning qandaydir ko'rinishini o'z ichiga oladi, masalan, bu yerda asosan musulmon aholi tomonidan Rojdestvo archasi va Qorbobo bilan nishonlanadigan Yangi yil. Tabiiyki, har bir hududning o'ziga xos bayramlari bor. YuNESKO tomonidan insoniyat og‘zaki va nomoddiy merosining durdona asari sifatida e’tirof etilgan Boysumdagi “Boysun bahori” festivali diqqatga sazovor.
Navro'z
Butun Oʻzbekiston boʻylab oʻtkaziladigan yana bir Yangi yil bayrami bu Navroʻzdir (shuningdek, Navroʻz, Navroʻz va boshqa koʻplab oʻzgarishlar). "Navro'z" so'zi eron tilida "yangi kun" degan ma'noni anglatadi, shuning uchun tabiiyki Navro'z Eronning Yangi yilidir. Har yili 21-mart kuni o‘tkaziladigan Navro‘z ko‘pchilik o‘zbeklar uchun qutlug‘ bayramdir, chunki yilning shu davrida ular uyg‘onish va yangilanish umidini bog‘laydilar. Butun mamlakat bo'ylab oilalar va mahalliy jamoalar barcha zavqlanadigan dabdabali ziyofatlar tayyorlaydilar.

Boysun Bahori

O‘zbekistonning turli hududlarida bahor faslida ko‘plab mahalliy yoki viloyat bayramlari o‘tkaziladi. Eng yirik va balki madaniy ahamiyatga ega bo‘lgan tadbir bu Boysun bahori yoki Boysun bahori sayli. Surxondaryo viloyatining tog‘li Boysun qishlog‘ida o‘tkazib kelinayotgan ushbu festival islomdan oldingi davrlarga borib taqaladi va davr sinovidan o‘tgan liboslar, qo‘shiqlar, raqslar, ertaklar va boshqa mahalliy urf-odatlarni o‘z ichiga oladi. Bu voqea mintaqa tarixi va madaniyatiga shunchalik singib ketganki, YUNESKO Boysun madaniy makonini Insoniyat og‘zaki va nomoddiy merosining durdona asari deb atagan.

Shark taronalari

“Shark taronalari” – Oʻzbekiston xalqaro jahon musiqa festivali. Birinchi marta 1997-yilda Samarqandda o‘tkazilgan festival yil sayin ko‘plab ijrochilar va ishtirokchilarni jalb qilmoqda. Mustaqillik kuni

Har yili 1-sentabrda o‘tkaziladigan Mustaqillik kuni eng katta milliy bayramdir, chunki butun mamlakat uzoq davom etgan sovet istilosidan so‘ng o‘z mustaqilligi va suverenitetini qo‘lga kiritgan kunni eslaydi. Ko'plab shahar va qishloqlarda ziyofat va tomoshalar o'tkaziladi, lekin asosiy tadbir aynan Toshkentdagi Alisher Navoiy nomidagi milliy bog'da bo'lib o'tadi. Ushbu bog'dan prezident xalqqa murojaat qiladi, shundan so'ng mamlakat qo'shiqchilari va aktyorlarining chiqishlari, katta feyerverklar namoyish etiladi.

Yangi yil

O‘zbeklarda “Yillar” deb nomlangan yangi yil bayrami o‘ziga xos qiziq. Odatda boshqa mamlakatlarda Rojdestvo bayramida o‘tkaziladigan urf-odatlar O‘zbekistonda Yangi yil bayramida bo‘lib o‘tadi. Ushbu urf-odatlar, asosan, ko'plab bezaklar bilan Rojdestvo daraxti o'rnatishni o'z ichiga oladi.
