This book begins with the description of the seemingly family life of poor fisherman Kino, his wife Juana and his sleeping child Coyotito who is suddenly stung by a scorpion. Juana and Kino together with their neighbors go to the local doctor. But the doctor refuses to treat the baby because he found Kino doesn’t have enough money to pay for the treatment.
Then Kino dives into the sea to find a pearl. Because he is going to sell it to pay the doctor. Fortunately he finds a large pearl. Hearing that the doctor comes to treat Coyotito but his first intend is to know the place of pearl which Kino buried. One day Juana says that they will be in danger because of this pearl however Kino doesn’t think so.One day Juana tries to throw the pearl into the sea but Kino notices that. After some days Kino is attacked by two people and he survived.
They have to leave their house in order to be alive. A group of trackers also follows them to kill Kino and his wife and to take the pearl. While they are resting at night, Kino attacks and kills them.Unfortunately, one of the trackers manages to kill Coyotito and the baby is dead. Heartbroken, Kino and Juana return to home. The two approach the gulf and Kino looks at the pearl for the last time and sees in the image of Coyotito with his head shot away.Kino throws it into the sea. The pearl sinks bottom and buries in the sand.
The book has a tragic end since the baby faces to death. On the other hand it is pity that Kino was going to get Coyotito to the school selling the pearl. But now there is neither Coyotito or the pearl.
I would recommend you to read the book. By reading it you will be aware of how the avarice lead the human to poor and tragic results.
