“WHAT IS NEW NOW WILL LATER BE OLD” this is the fundamental rule of nature. Change is inevitable and time has to bow with respect to change. A successful man is one who anticipates change and flows with it. FD is a book which has its centre a plot which describes the changes in the protagonists life and struggle to change with that change. Three countries hospital problems are mostly caused by its inability to move with the times. The inability comes from the fact tht most doctors who get appointed have their own axes to grind. The hospital is divided into two categories of people – one who wants to reform and the other who resist change. Both the groups have their convincing reasons. Domestic politics take a heavy toll on the efficiency of the hospital. At the epicenter of the animosities stand Dr.pearson whom his enemies also acknowledge as a brilliant pathologist. His Achilles heel is his resistance towards change. The institution is left with incompetents. The reformers are facing a losing battle with people resisting change on the other side led by the obstinate Dr. pearson and supported by Eustace swank , the millionaire patron of the hospital. Eventually there seems no light at the end of the tunnel. A chain of tragic events occurs at the hospital with several medical negligence cases , in an alarming frequency. The cases have one thing in common – they all arise out of the faulty diagnosis submitted by the pathology department. Despite all these criticisms Dr.pearson refuses to keep up with the times. However hes convinced to accept an assistant pathologist – Dr.coleman. When Coleman orders for the much required rabbit serums test, the tug of war between Pearson and Coleman starts. Pearson cancels the order. In the meantime the test about the RH thing are done without rabbit serum. Mrs. Alexander gives birth to a child tht is 8 week premature.The child eventually dies and its so discovered tht cocoon serum test would have been done the child could have been saved by the blood transfusion test at the time of birth. Now it was impossible. Another case was of the catering department. There were problems in the dishwashers and tht resulted in the typhoid cases. Management was horrified at the idea of having an epidemic in the hospital. They order stool culture tests of all the employees of the hospital. The test would have been done by pathology dpt. long ago but they never did the routine check up for 6 months. Story also goes deep into the lives of nurses and interns talks about the dalliance of a resident and a nurse and finally how unfortunate the nurse ( Vivian)had been to have a cancer in the knee at the age of 19 only and have her leg removed my amputation. Finally Dr. pearson gives his resignation and Dr. coleman becomes in charge of pathology department. The dialogue between both of them when pearson is clearing the desks is simply great. It enables us to envision the importance of experience but with experience you start to grow old. Any person who approves change grows old resisting change. To conclude FD is a story on life and death struggles in a large hospital . it focuses on Joe Pearson , the chief pathologist who must make the final diagnosis on every patient and eventually on himself…..guess I cn never forget the good old doctor lighting his cigar rite below the no smoking board!
