MA EDIN – 5420 Week 3: Critique 2 Muminova Nasiba Group 9T Professor Maria Kovac “ To listen with an open mind and heart is an invaluable skill that takes time and effort to develop ” Allan Lokos It is estimated that adults spend almost half of their communication time for listening, and students can get 90% of their information in school by listening to teachers and each other. Based on that, I only knew that listening was a necessary skill in communication. However, listening is an important skill not only in communication, but also in the learning process. Listening is the key to our successful lives and the foundation of our goals. Given the importance of listening in language learning and teaching, language teachers need to help their students become effective listeners. I realized that listening is an essential skill for all effective communication. For many years, listening comprehension was not a priority in language teaching, but the current focus on education, wider and deeper coverage of each sphere, has changed this. The given article covers what listening comprehension is, its role in educational process, listening behavior, goals of in learning language, guidelines for effective listening, importance of it, internal and external factors, and some researches. Most people thought of it as a passive skill but listening is an active process in which the receiver takes responsibility in it. I saw proof of this in the article. First of all, listening was introduced to the students as a future necessity, a key determinant in employment, promotion, job search and the position of listening in society. But very few students were suitable for this instruction, because each institution had not separate courses for teaching listening comprehension and there was no single method of teaching it. I can say that the creation of Integrative Listening Model (ILM), its stages and practical applying was an effective and comfortable for students. The Integrative Listening Model provides a unique and practical framework to address this teaching/learning process. It stresses contextual and personal filters, as well as self-assessment and goal-setting, to promote ongoing listening development, evaluation. This is exactly what I liked in this article. Only by listening can students independently test the several components of receiving, understanding, interpreting, evaluating, and responding. I think it's important for them to become effective listeners in the future, to have versatile skills. But I am in favor of easier teaching in every skill. I believe that difficulties will cause students to withdraw from studies and lose interest. In the article, I did not see the important aspects of teaching in easier ways and I couldn't find information on how to deal with it individually. Because we know that not all students in groups have the same level of knowledge, so their listening comprehension is not the same. Everyone has different challenges. At this point, it would be more appropriate to have a new line of explanation. I believe that the wide use of interactive methods will be an important factor in its development. So, in conclusion, we can say that listening is important not only improving our knowledge, but also to improve human qualities. In my point of view, listening is the best learnable skill. The right direction and a little more attention will increase the effectiveness of learning through simple and interesting tasks and ultimately lead to better results.
