“The Happy Man” by W. Somerset Maugham
Somerset Maugham is popular with his stories which describes the life of people that time and he mainly focuses on in his novels description of characters realistically from this point of view he is peculiar to other writers. Concerning to “Happy Man” , the story tells about a naïve doctor who really wants to work in Spain so he comes to ask advice from the author who knows about Spain . As a result, after several years the author meets the doctor in Spain working happily. In order to understand the story clearly it can be divided into three parts, In the first part , the author shows himself pessimistic , It can be seen by the metaphors he used “ A solitary prisoner in a solitary tower” with this metaphor the life is drawn an analogy to solitary tower and people are prisoners of it . Besides, He uses the metaphor “Life is A difficult business” it is also an analogy which describes the authors views about life. With help of these two metaphors the authors wants to show that life is essential but difficult too. The main cultural concept in this story is happiness since the main character a stranger, a doctor, leaves his country, his wife and his work to find the real happiness in this life . The text itself is descriptive and we can see a number of descriptive signals for example, a total stranger , a modest apartment , an apologetic laugh, a cursory glance , a wonderful life , a little man, trifling indisposition, a squeamish patient, a dim recollection, a Spanish woman and etc. These descriptive signals help to find out author’s conceptual world picture. From the story one can be inferred that life is full of compensations, if you take risk, you lose something but you can find something instead of it which will be important for.
