Description: The goal of our program is to train academic subspecialty physicians to be 

outstanding leaders in research, teaching and clinical care. The fellowship is supported by both 

the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Urology. We have a long history of clinical 

and research collaboration between departments and the fellows receive integrated instruction 

and complementary clinical experiences through both departments. Clinical and surgical training 

includes treatment of urinary incontinence, anal incontinence, fistulas, pelvic organ prolapse, 

congenital anomalies/neovagina creation, gender confirmation surgery, postpartum perineal 

issues, and colorectal pelvic floor dysfunction involving a complex referral patient population. 

The clinical curriculum is enriched with clinical and surgical experience in Gynecologic Minimally 

Invasive Surgery, Vulvar Diseases and Gastroenterology. There is a strong emphasis on 

research and collaboration based on long

‐standing relationships with our basic science 

departments including Biomechanical Engineering and other clinical departments including 

Radiology and Surgery. Michigan fellows have won many awards for their original research at 

national and international meetings and are involved with the NIH supported Pelvic Floor 

Research Group.
