III. CONCLUSION

In this work, we have studied the early legends of King Arthur. Periods and sub-periods of their formation were identified.

Many medieval scholars and literary critics studied the legends about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. They studied the earliest sources, rewrote already created works, put them together and created something of their own.
Throughout its history (from the earliest legends of the Welsh monks to more recent fantasy novels by authors such as T. H. White, M. Stewart, and M. Z. Bradley), the legends of King Arthur have evolved, undergone significant changes and turned into completely new literary works.
Undoubtedly, the clearest image of King Arthur, his wife Guinevere and the brave knights of the Round Table was created by Thomas Malory. But one should not underestimate the contribution to the development of the legend of earlier authors, in particular, the work of Geoffrey of Monmouth (1100 - 1154) and Chrétien de Troy (1135 - 1183).
The Arthurian novels are built according to the same scheme created by Geoffrey of Monmouth, who gave the world new literary heroes: Guinevere, Kay, Mordred, as well as the sorcerer Merlin, including his entire history, not forgetting the magical transportation of the Stonehenge Stone Circle from Ireland to Salisbury Plain.
Chrétien de Troyes, in turn, introduced us to the first knight of the King of the Britons, Lancelot, who in later Arthurian works became the third side of the love triangle, along with Arthur and Guinevere. He is also among the knights seeking the Holy Grail, the most sacred of holy relics, which later writers identify with the chalice used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper.

Based on all the above innovations of the time and earlier sources, Thomas Malory, an English writer of the fifteenth century, created his invaluable work - the novel "The Death of Arthur".

Careful study of Thomas Malory's novel has helped us to identify themes and issues common to early legends and Le Morte d'Arthur. Like no one else, Malory managed to convey the spirit of medieval Europe, chivalry and accurately portray the nobility of that period.
The knights in Malory's novel are valiant, beneficent, and faithful. They are loyal to their ruler, God, and their lofty goals.
However, they always have a fierce enemy, seeking to break the brotherhood of the Round Table and prove their dominance to the world.
Undoubtedly, Malory pays great attention to the image of a woman in her novel. In Le Morte d'Arthur, the woman is either a witch (sorceress), like the Fairy Morgana, Morgause, the Lady of the Lake, or a martyr, like Guinevere, Elaine, and numerous maidens who have lost their beloved knights.
Despite the presence of magic and mysticism in the novel, it can be called vital, since its central themes are the themes of patriotism, love, faith, nobility. The author does not avoid the themes of revenge, jealousy, envy, love triangles, which makes the novel even closer to life and understandable for all times and peoples.
Thus, we were able to carefully study the novel by Thomas Malory "The Death of Arthur" and identify the themes and problems of this work, which was the purpose of this work.
