Mary Cavan Tyrone
The wife of James Tyrone and the mother of Jamie and Edmund, Mary is 54 years old and still maintains a young and graceful-looking figure. She suffers from a morphine addiction that began when her youngest son, Edmund, was born. Though we can feel her desperation to recover, she falls victim to the addiction time and time again. From the start of the play we can see that Mary is almost always on edge and fidgety, constantly in flux between self-delusion and a morphine-induced haze. When she seems to be living in the real world, which she finds depressing and hopeless, she is unable to deal with any unpleasant truths.


James Tyrone, Jr.
Better known as Jamie, he is the oldest son of James and Mary Tyrone at 33 years old. A life full of self-indulgence is beginning to show itself in physical ways. His hair is thinning, he′s always sneering, and he′s in a constant state of cynicism. Like his father, he aspires to be an actor, but his unapologetic alcoholism and tendency to spend his time at saloons and brothels have rendered him unsuccessful. He has a history of failing at nearly everything he has ever tried. This is the root cause for Jamie and James′ constant arguments, followed closely by the fact that Jamie blames his father for the family′s misfortunes. He′s very protective over his younger brother, Edmund, but harbors a desire to shape him in his own image as well. This is in part because Jamie blames Edmund in part for the pain that his mother now suffers in her addiction.


Edmund Tyrone
Edmund, 22 years old, is the youngest son of James and Mary Tyrone. Unlike Jamie, Edmund more closely resembles his mother, down to the nervous shaking of his hands. He also shares his mother′s morbid outlook on the world, much to the distress of his father. He is intellectual, poetic and well-traveled, having been a seaman aboard merchant ships. He appears to be in bad health with his ashen complexion, sunken cheeks and persistent cough, eventually getting a diagnosis of tuberculosis. He is very affectionate towards his older brother, Jamie, and looks up to him.
