When is a room not a room? Answer: when it is an installation.
Minimalist installer Martin Creed has won the Turner Prize, Britain's most prestigious art award, this year. He received it for his work "The Lights Going On and off" (The Lights Going On and off). This piece is an empty room with a couple of flashing lamps, and the decision of the Turner committee has already caused controversy. I think that this work is nothing special; it is not a complex work of art.
I agree with the opinion and reasoning of artist Stuart Jeffery. Typically, an installation occupies a large amount of space or captivates the viewer with some special properties, such as visual effects. It is often created specifically for a specific space: a museum, gallery and other public locations (works that are presented OUTSIDE the interior are called public art, landscape installations). Installations are conceptual models; they create around themselves a wide field of meanings, within which various concepts brought from visual art, architecture, culture, from a historical or contemporary context can interact. An installation is even designed for the viewer to interact with it: as if, there is no distance between art and man, which immerses the viewer much deeper into the work and creates a new type of relationship between the creator, art and the viewer. The installation creates a fundamentally new space and sensations that cannot be experienced in the usual context. This genre does not always seek to please the viewer. Like much in contemporary art, the installation wants to challenge, to appeal to human emotions, both positive and negative. How to evaluate how “successful” an installation is? Like any contemporary art, a good installation changes the way we see, feel or think about the world around us. The most impressive installation works of art have been listed above, but the world of works is extremely rich in worthy exhibits, as well as talented artists. An installation in the fine arts has an incredible property - it is necessarily tied to a specific place, it cannot be changed or the sculpture can be freely moved, interest in observation is lost when moving to another location, and it is a fragile, temporary object, pleasing the eye for a limited amount of time - a day, week, and month. It is very rare for installations to become a permanent part of the exposition, immediately losing their sense of liveliness, turning into a boring exhibit.
Why do installations create such a strong impression on the viewer? There are three reasons for this: critical thinking, inspiration and emotions. The authors speak about global problems in beautiful poetic language. Often installations pull a person out of the routine and throw in an unexpected thought, assessment or idea: they are present outside the context of a museum, they can be found in shopping centers, airports and other public spaces where a person is not quite used to expecting art. I believe that a modern installation should be unique and show, say with its appearance that the whole juice of works is love for people.
