There are four present tense forms:
We can use all these forms :
< Talk about the present:
London is the capital of Britain.
He works at McDonald’s.
He is working at McDonald's.
He has worked there for three months now.
He has been working there for three months now.
The next train leaves this evening at 17.00.
I'll phone you when I get home.
He is meeting Peter in town this afternoon.
I'll come home as soon as I have finished work.
You will be tired out after you have been working all night.
Some English verbs, which we call state, non-continuous or stative verbs, aren't used in continuous tenses (like the present continuous, or the future continuous). These verbs often describe states that last for some time. Here is a list of some common ones:
Non-stative grammar, also known as non-durative grammar, is a grammatical system that does not express the duration or continuity of an action or state. It is commonly contrasted with stative grammar, which focuses on the duration or continuity of an action or state.
In non-stative grammar, actions or states are usually expressed as single events or moments without any indication of their duration. This includes verbs that express instantaneous actions, sudden changes, or specific events. For example:
"She bought a car." (non-stative)
"He burst into tears." (non-stative)
"The tree fell down." (non-stative)
Non-stative grammar tends to be used when discussing actions or events that occur quickly, have a definite endpoint, or are seen as punctual in nature. It is commonly found in languages that distinguish between different aspects of verbs, such as perfective and imperfective aspects.
On the other hand, stative grammar focuses on actions or states that have a duration or continuity. Verbs expressing ongoing actions or states fall into this category. Examples include:
"They were running in the park." (stative)
"She was reading a book." (stative)
"He was sleeping." (stative)
Stative grammar is used to describe actions or states that are ongoing, continuous, or in progress.
It is important to note that the distinction between stative and non-stative grammar varies across languages, and not all languages make this distinction explicitly. Additionally, some verbs may have both stative and non-stative uses, depending on the context in which they are used.
