Please change adopt stronger safety rules so that more lives can be saved. My sisters AnnaLeah and Mary Lydia are gone forever due to a truck collision, and no other family should have to go through this. Save lives. 21: katy Hartigan, Grayslake, Illinois, United States There shouldn’t be a cost benefit analysis for lives… 39: Janet Schweitzer, Chicago, Illinois, United States I worry every day about my children’s safety. 379: Joanna van Casteren, Marktheidenfeld, Germany Wir lieben die tieren 450: Barbara Daniels, UNION DALE, Pennsylvania, United States THIS IS NOT AN ANIMAL WELFARE ISSUE. 540: Ake Lindberg, Eskilstuna, Sweden Set a strict zero vision! 483
484 CHAPTER 9. COMMENTS BY SIGNERS OF THE PETITION 596: Marianne Karth, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, United States There is no one that this does not potentially impact in some way. We are asking for bold and decisive action to reduce tragic, preventable crash fatalities. Don’t wait until it touches you personally to move heaven & earth to identify and require the best possible protection. Once a loved one becomes a motor vehicle crash statistic, it will be too late–they will not come back to you.
I have good friends who lost 2 beautiful daughters in a horrific truck un- derride accident that could have been prevented with tougher trucking laws. Please sign this petition to help make a change in regulations that will help prevent more deaths on the road.
I always want to avert my eyes when I see the highway billboards that announce the number of traffic death to date in Illinois, but I make myself look to remind myself and my kids to drive safely and defensively. The numbers are staggering and devastating.
This breaks my heart, I am so very sorry. 2247: Sherri Gillespie, LOS GATOS, California, United States OMB & DOT 1. Adopt rational Vision Zero Safety strategy. 2. Apply Vision Zero principles initiating rulemaking to require forward collision avoidance. 3119: Lana Briscoe, Northport, New York, United States Secretary Foxx, it is avoidable and inexcusable that about 40,000 Amer- icans die in vehicular crashes every year. Stop the cost/benefit analysis bean counting. The lives of Americans are at stake. 485 3335: Elaine Fischer, ROANOKE, Virginia, United States Lives are at stake! 3801: Lucy Schneider, WESTWOOD, New Jersey, United States This is a horrific tragedy that could have been prevented. I urge the De- partment of Transportation to adopt a VISION ZERO Policy!
I was with members of this family when they suffered the tragic loss of the their sisters and daughters. No parent should have to go through this when it can be prevented. 4684: Keith C Schnip, BELLINGHAM, Washington, United States Big trucks, i.e. 18 wheelers, etc. should be banned from the nation’s Inter- state Highway System. They cannot coexist safely with regular automotive traffic, i.e. cars. The roads simply are not big enough or safe enough. 4722: Sheelagh O Cathasaigh, EUREKA, California, United States Bring back freight trains! Lessen roadway and highway long hauls by bring back freight trains.
These dear friends lost their daughters due to a needless crash. Would you please join me as I join them in their quest for safer roads. God Bless You.
Driver training and qualification standards must be heightened 5139: Road Crash, Winchester, United Kingdom Best wishes Marianne not far to 6,000 486 CHAPTER 9. COMMENTS BY SIGNERS OF THE PETITION 5144: Darla Creel, Fort Worth, Texas, United States I knew this family. What was sad is that these lives were lost going to a weekend of three graduations and a wedding. We need to support change for lives. 5266: Isaac Karth, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, United States Three years ago, I was sitting in my apartment, working on my class projects, when I got a phone call that turned my world upside down. My family’s car had been hit by a truck, and I was the first person that the hos- pital was able to reach. There was a lot of confusion; no one knew where my two sisters who had been in the back seat of the car had been taken. I had a pair of dice in my pocket that day, the same pair of dice that I had when my father called me later that evening with the news that my sister had died in the crash. Humans are bad at estimating probabilities. A one-in-a-million chance sounds rare, but that’s close to the odds the NWS reports for being struck by lightning, and 330 Americans are injured that way every year. It’s rare, but it happens. In probability theory, it’s called the law of large numbers. If you roll the dice often enough, or for enough people, the dice are going to come up as ones at a predictable, measurable rate. The IIHS reported that in 2013, there were 10.3 deaths from motor ve- hicle crashes per 100,000 people. That’s about one-in-ten-thousand, way more likely than one-in-a-million. And, unlike other leading causes of death, this is an entirely human-created problem, one that didn’t exist two hundred years ago. Automotive safety has been improving over time. But it is still one of the leading causes of death in America. Curing cancer, one of the other leading causes, is expensive and difficult, requiring research just to figure out if it is even possible. In contrast, for motor vehicle deaths there are many cases where we already know simple ways to reduce motor vehicle fatalities, such as effective underride guards, and we have promising re- search for even more. We shouldn’t settle for one-in-ten thousand, or even one-in-a-thousand. We should strive to be better than that. Human lives shouldn’t be a nickle and dime proposition. Even low chances of death are still too high. I shouldn’t have to roll the dice every time I need to leave my house. I shouldn’t have to wonder, every
487 time my family is out on the road, if today is going to be the day that they roll too many ones again.
You could put signs way ahead!!! This is senseless. What if it was your kids that were killed!! Don’t be so cheap!!!!
Our families’ lives are worth more than the cost in dollars. 7072: Michelle Novak, Delevan, New York, United States Another family member whose deceased 22 year-old nephew’s life was weighed against a load of cookies and found lacking. We have had enough. You can stop this. But your political will seems to always lose to the mon- etary will of those executives and shareholders in the industry. Oh, if you could feel shame…..or empathy. 8844: Brie Handgraaf, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, United States The bottom line should NEVER outweigh the cost of a human life. The status quo needs to be changed before anyone else suffers such a tragedy as the Karths. 9825: Ryan McMahan, Holly Springs, North Carolina, United States I work in the accident reconstruction industry and see countless underride accidents each year, many ending in serious injury or death. The severity of injury in these types of crashes could be significantly reduced with the simple implementation of additional bracing on the trailers that travel our roadways. 488 CHAPTER 9. COMMENTS BY SIGNERS OF THE PETITION 9857: Dennis Fox, ANTELOPE, California, United States Smoke alarm manufactures put $ before peoples safety also. Please help save millions of people from dangers of ionization smoke alarms that fail to warn occupants of smoldering smoke that are in 90% of all homes. 100’s of 1000’s have been killed or seriously burned over last 40 years due to ionization alarms inability to detect smoldering smoke. But they are cheaper to make so more profits compared to safer photoelectric alarms. copy and paste link below http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/213/386/111/
937e6a8a-6f70-11e5-84aa-06f32047ed2d 10919: Sonya Silver, Nashville, North Carolina, United States Eveyone’s life is priceless. So are the unconditional love that we express to our love ones. So we need to make a change and to anyone denying us to do so need to ask themselves how much is their families worth? 11124: Ed Slattery, Lutherville Timonium, Maryland, United States My wife was killed and two sons seriously injured, one permanently, when a trucker fell asleep at the wheel and pushed their car under the rear end of another semi in front of them while coming into a construction zone. 11282: David M. Dunn, LANSING, Michigan, United States Seriously? Putting profit before human life is short term thinking and, by the way, immoral.
In 2003 a truck driver on duty for 29 hours straight, fell asleep at the wheel and rear ended my SUV. The tractor trailer was traveling at 55 mph
489 and crashed into me while at a dead stop and crushing me into an RV. Near death, first responders worked frantically for 45 minutes to free me from my SUV and the drivers side that had been crushed to 16 inches. 30 surgeries and 12 years later I have fought hard to live and fight for cherished loved ones like Annaleah and Mary Lynn Karth that can’t fight for themselves. Profit over life must stop!
Each of the drives too fast, with the mobile phone at the ear, drunk or on drugs, you should first confiscate the car, then squeeze into a small dice together, and finally, as the crowning, the driver’s license for life lock. (And if you want, it may even give a few dozen steps to the place where the sun never shines inside! (In his asshole) 15880: LELA Lesson, Cortaro, Arizona, United States Please prevent another family from losing a loved one and going through this heartbreak.
We should be living in a country of HUMAN VALUES, NOT DOLLAR VALUES
The Traffic Safety Coalition is proud to support the call for a Vision Zero safety model working towards zero deaths and zero grave injuries on our nation’s roads. 15905: Suzann Oberhauser, Somerset, Ohio, United States We lost our daughter in a red light running crash on 1/26/02. A red light camera might have stopped the man who killed her. Our State has now virtually outlawed the use of red light cameras. Where is the cost/benefit in that???
490 CHAPTER 9. COMMENTS BY SIGNERS OF THE PETITION 15908: Emily Stein, Medford, Massachusetts, United States Vision Zero has worked to reduce deaths in NYC, as well as in many countries in Europe. It’s time for the US to take traffic safety seriously and prevent more deaths on our roads. 15909: The National Coalition For Safer Roads, Bradenton, Florida, United States Please support this lifesaving Policy! We are losing precious lives daily around our country. Best practices and safety devices alike must be utilized. #Safetysaveslives 15910: Joan Moore, san francisco, California, United States Protect the Nations highways for everyone. We have waited long enough. This insanity must stop. Families are dying.
To reduce traffic fatalities we need a worldwide VISION ZERO 15921: Drue Freeman, Cupertino, California, United States Let’s save lives. The technology exists to do this! 15928: Connie Nance, Fredericksburg, Virginia, United States If you are an Advocate, BE AN ADVOCATE. Show up for those whose voices have been silenced.
For a free and democratic society, Vision Zero is a moral obligation. For our leaders to tolerate 33,000 traffic-related deaths and untold disabling injuries per year is a national tragedy. None of these people should have been discarded through the application of a flawed cost-benefit analysis approach to highway safety policy. Please help every person have a safe drive home.
491 15961: Pamela Dubsky, HOLIDAY HILLS, Illinois, United States Some laws need to be changed to help change the amount of lives being lost to accidents on the highway and elsewhere! This could have been avoided!!!!!! 16143: Kathy Moore, GARDNERVILLE, Nevada, United States I agree wholly with this petition in its entirety. GOD Bless Annaleah, Mary, their friend, and family.
