Patient Information Leaflet CALCINATE ® 500 mg Film Coated Tablets (Calcium Carbonate) Read all of this leaflet carefully before you start taking this medicine. Keep this leaflet. You may need to read it again. If you have any further questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine has been prescribed for you. Do not pass it on to others. It may harm them, even if their symptoms are the same as yours. If any of the side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist. In this leaflet: 1. What Calcinate is and what it is used for The name of this medicine is Calcinate. This medicine contains calcium Carbonate. Calcium is an important constituent of bone and teeth. It’s used for calcium deficiency in: Elderly men. Women during and after menopause and during pregnancy and breast feeding. 2. Before you take Calcinate Calcinate is not recommended for use in children and adolescents. Do not take Calcinate if you have: Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation. A Condition which leads to hypercalcaemia or hypercalciuria. Kidney stones. Sudden long-term immobilisation. Take special care with Calcinate : In patients with a tendency to kidney stones a concomitant increase in fluid intake is recommended. Caution should be taken when it is concomitantly administrated with digoxin. Taking other medicines: Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. Please tell your doctor if you are taking one of the following medicines: Thiazide diuretics (medicines used to treat high blood pressure), as they may increase the amount of calcium in your blood. Oral steroids, as they may reduce the amount of calcium in your blood. Cardiac glycosides (medicines used to treat heart problems), as they may cause more effects if you take too much calcium. Tetracycline antibiotics, as the amount absorbed may be reduced. They should be taken at least 2 hours before, or 4-6 hours after Calcinate. Estramustin (a medicine used in chemotherapy), thyroid hormones or medicines containing iron, zinc or strontium, as the amount absorbed may be reduced. They should be taken at least 2 hours before or after Calcinate. CALCINATE 500 MG FILM COATED TABLETS MODULE 1 Regional Administrative Information MODULE 1. 3 Product Information MODULE 1. 3.3 Patient information leaflet (PIL) MODULE 1. 3.3.2 English leaflet Bisphosphonates (a treatment for bone conditions), fluoride or fluoroquinolones (a type of antibiotic), as the amount absorbed may be reduced. They should be taken at least 3 hours before or after Calcinate. Other medicines containing calcium while you are taking Calcinate this may increase the level of calcium in your blood. Taking Calcinate with food and drink In the two hours before taking Calcinate, you should avoid eating foods containing oxalic acid (e.g. spinach and rhubarb) or phytic acid (e.g. wholegrain cereals), which can reduce calcium absorption.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. This medicine may be used during pregnancy, however the total daily intake of calcium should not be higher than 1500 mg, the daily dose of Calcinate must not exceed one tablet per day. Higher amounts may have negative effects on the unborn child. During breast-feeding you can use Calcinate. As calcium pass into breast milk. Driving and using machines No effects on the ability to drive and use machines are expected. 3. How to take Calcinate Always take Calcinate exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The usual dose is 1 tablet twice a day for adults and elderly (e.g. one in the morning and one in the evening). Pregnant women should only take 1 tablet per day. You should take tablet with a large glass of water (200 ml). If you are more than 65 years-old or have difficulties to swallow, you should divide the breakable tablet in two parts and take them with a large glass of water (200 ml). If you take more Calcinate than you should If you have taken more Calcinate than you should and experience any symptoms of overdose, stop taking Calcinate and immediately contact your doctor. Symptoms of overdose may include: anorexia, excessive thirst, feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental health problems, increased urine output, bone pain, kidney stones. In the case of prolonged over dosage, calcium deposits may appear in blood vessels or body tissues. In the case of major over dosage, cardiac arrest may occur.
Do not take a double dose to compensate for a forgotten tablet. 4. Possible side effects Like all medicines, Calcinate can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Uncommon side effect (affects 1 to 10 users in 1,000): excess calcium levels in the blood or urine. Rare side effects (affects 1 to 10 users in 10,000): constipation, flatulence, feeling sick (nausea), abdominal pain, diarrhea, itching, skin rashes and urticaria. If any of the side effects get serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use Calcinate after the expiry date which is stated on the blister and outer carton. Store below 30 °C. Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment. 6. Further information What Calcinate contains: The active substance is: Calcium Carbonate. Each tablet contains Contains Calcium Carbonate equivalent to elemental Calcium 500 mg. The other ingredients are: Microcrystalline Cellulose, Sodium Starch Glycollate, Croscarmellose Sodium, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Magnesium Stearate, coating material Opadry white. What CALCINATE looks like and contents of the pack: Calcinate 500 mg Film Coated tablets is white to off white, oblong, biconvex, oval shaped film coated tablets having MC76 on one side and break line on the other side. Calcinate 500 mg F.C. Tablets are packed in Aluminum foil blister of 10 tablets and each pack contains 3 blisters to give a pack size of 30 tablets.
