Task 2. Article reflection

Read the article “Communicative Language Teaching” by Patricia A. Duff and give extended answers to the following questions:

  1. What is CLT? How and why has it been evolving 21st century?

  2. What is Common European Framework of Reference? What is the relation of CEFR to CLT?

  1. Communicative language teaching is an approach which encourages students to communicate in a foreign language. CLT emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, writing. However, the method focuses on especially listening and speaking. CLT has been enhancing because technologies are increasing. In fact, since the origin of CLT in the 1970s, it has been developing in a very wide range of variants. In addition, according to 21st century’s sociological and pedagogical viewpoint, the main purpose to teach a language is helping students to be able to use language confidently in the target language and chase their career, education etc.

  2. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for depicting language competence. It describes language competence on the six-point scale from A1 to C2. CEFR makes it easier to anyone involved in language teaching and testing, such as teachers and students, to see the level of different qualifications. In my opinion, CLT helps learners to get high CEFR qualification. Because listening, speaking, reading and writing competence of learners are identified by CEFR, the focal point is CLT emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, writing at the same time.
