Crime rates will fall as advances in technology make it easier to detect and prevent crimes. Do you agree or disagree? It is argued that the developments in information technologies will enable authorities not only to identify the criminals but also deter them from committing a crime. Although it is expected that certain types of crimes will be reduced, however I believe that advancement in technology will give a rise to new forms of crime eventually increasing the overall crime rate. This essay will firstly discuss the kinds of crimes that are likely to be prevented by the use of new gadgets, and secondly will mention the types crimes that have increased in number. On the one hand the use of smart technologies will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the prevention and detection of conventional types of felonies such as burglary or theft. CCTV cameras for example, have been installed in almost all public buildings, banks, shopping centers and other places where there is a danger of someone being involved in unlawful action. Thousands of cases have been resolved and criminals convicted based on the footage recorded by CCTV cameras, while many more criminals were pushed back from doing something illegal noticing the presence of surveillance cameras. For example, it has been estimated by New York Police department that after the installation of cameras in shopping centers the rate of crime in this place has been reduced by more than 50 per cent. On the other hand, due to the application of technologies for the wrong purposes new types of cyber-crimes such as online fraud, identity theft and cyber bullying emerged. The newspapers and TV news programs are full of stories of someone’s bank account being stolen by hackers or criminals using a person’s identity to commit the crimes in the name of other people. The sophistication of the software and technologies cyber criminals use makes it really difficult to trace the crime and catch the felons. For example, Kun.uz, news website in Uzbekistan, recently reported that 20 billion Uzbek soums were stolen by hackers from one of the national banks. In conclusion, it cannot be denied that information technologies have been successfully utilized to bring down the number of certain crimes but it’s also truism that it opened the way for new types of cyber-crimes. As technologies continue to evolve, we can expect the situation to get worse and the new kinds of online felonies to appear. Download 58.06 Kb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
