Many good things have come from the internet, and socially it is very helpful to us. If you move away from a very close friend now you can stay in touch with e-mail and instant messaging. Communication which once took time to write on a piece of paper is now reduced to a couple key strokes and the click of a mouse. You can meet all kinds of different new people in chat rooms with common interests as you. In fact some people have formed many lasting relationships with others they meet online. If communication dominates the majority of internet use there is a good reason to expect that it will have a positive social effect on society. Communication, meaning contact with neighbors, family, friends, and participation in social groups affects a person’s level of social support, and in turn fosters one’s purpose in life and their psychological well-being. In Donald Tapscott’s book Growing Up Digital (1998), he is a well known author of many internet books and articles, he talks about the boost of self-esteem that can be obtained from the internet in making friendships not based on physical qualities. There is a story of a seven year old girl who had facial malformations and was unaccepted in society. She found a chat room to interact with other children, and was able to make friends without being persecuted for her facial malformations. She felt like she was accepted and she belonged.
This is another positive advantage of the internet because we are a society that is ruled by physical appearance, and the people who are not blessed with ” good looks” have a difficult time being accepted. Some are criticized and want to escape the in person contact that would leave them open to feelings of worthlessness. Through the internet people can interact without having to worry about what others will think of their looks, weight and other physical attributes. Through communication online people embark on a journey of getting to know someone for who they are and not what they look like. Using the internet is also becoming a necessity in this society because it is everywhere. What about other children keeping up with their peers? How are they supposed to do that if they don’t know how to use the internet? What about school papers? There is information online that you sometimes cannot find in the library. How can they keep up with their peers and their schoolwork without it? Children without access to the internet will be at a great disadvantage developmentally. The negative effects include alienation from institutions such as the family, education and places of work. The lack of face to face interaction with family members, co-workers and fellow students leads to diminished socialization skills. Some people are locking themselves into the anonymous world of their computers and not coming out.
Teleconferencing and data sharing helps people around the globe sit together in a conference. It saves a lot of traveling time and cost and can be conducted anywhere, anytime. Internet also facilitates people by tracking weather reports. If there’s a hurricane due, your net would warn you!
Internet has increased employment in a number of ways. One can work from the luxury of their home on the internet now. Posting of advertisements and recruiting employees from all around the globe is facilitated by the net. One can display their products on the net and connect with prospective buyers with distance not being an issue.
Trade is flourishing due to e-commerce sites. E-wallets are also helping and encouraging business. Boundaries of nations are not a problem anymore. Also, nowadays shopping with your wife doesn’t necessarily mean walking up and down the streets laden with bags in the scorching sun.
Internet has made several tasks easier, cheaper and faster. Data storage and retrieval doesn’t take hours and long piles of notebooks, all you need is a little pen drive and some handy skills.
Negative effects of Internet
With information, internet also provides us with entertainment. Games are one of the top forms of online entertainment. Adults and children alike are sometimes addicted to these games which can be extremely harmful for them, both personally and professionally. They start devoting most of their time to the net, and as the old saying goes “Time is Money”.
Again, with scholastic information, some rampantly unproductive content is also available freely on the net which can corrupt the minds of young, growing children. Violent and overly inappropriate visuals can cause long lasting damage.
Social networking, though beneficial, can sometimes engulf you in the virtual reality to such an extent that you start losing your actual identity. People lose touch with around the in order to communicate with people miles away. Needless to say, it ends relationships disastrously.
Data manipulation by criminals on the net causes breaches that can be extremely harmful. Internet facilitates all sorts of hackers and crackers, leaving your data vulnerable. No matter how high a method of security we use, internet permits loopholes to exist.
Lack of creativity and Cyber bullying are other instances of disadvantages of the net. Insomnia, physical inactivity, abandonment of the family, internet addiction, cheating, corruption, morally unacceptable behavior and crimes are on the rise since internet came into existence.
It has its great uses, but internet is also a potential hazard. To justly sum up the powers of the net, I’ll echo Dorothy Gambrell (Cat and Girl Volume I),
“If television’s a babysitter, the Internet is a drunk librarian who won’t shut up.”

Positive and Negative Impact of the Internet

This is the digital age and there’s no gainsaying the fact that most of the world or at least a sizeable chunk of the 7.5 Billion people are net savvy. We all use the internet to communicate with others, to use the same for hosting video conference calls or just to call one’s family. The fact remains that we all use the internet increasingly more these days on account of the fact that we can now carry out several tasks from being online. And thanks to IOT, or internet of things, the ways and means through which we can use the net to control our immediate environment has grown tenfold in the last few years. Although we are not yet living in a dystopian world, we may as well be there given the sheer amount of time that each one of us spends online. Given this, it is time that we took a closer look at some of the positive and negative impacts of the internet and the way it is being utilized today.
Most often children who are lonely or bored from families where nobody is around they will use the computer as a tool to escape real life. They are isolated and have no other outlet and become depressed. There is no official psychological diagnosis of a computer addiction as yet, but more research is being done on the topic. As with all advances in our life time there are good things and there are bad things that come along with it. The internet is both good and bad, positive and negative. The key here is to watch how we spend our time on it, what we do on the internet, how we act when we are on it, and how we act when we are not on it. We must closely monitor our children and make sure what they are ingesting is beneficial to them and is not harmful to them. We must also limit ours and our children’s time on the internet and the computer. Closely look at and evaluate how our social lives are progressing and how our family lives relationships are. Maintain good and stable relationships with our friends and family members and always try to remember that they are what we care about. A computer is a machine and should not be taken as anything stronger than that. All the information that is at our fingertips should be used in a way that is useful to society. The internet should be a tool of knowledge and not a tool of escape and avoidance.
Internet has taken the world by surprise with its magnificent powers of eliminating the boundaries of space and time. Its grandeur is magnified by the fact that it enables one to do tasks that were regarded as nothing short of “miraculous” by people a few decades ago.
Internet is a global system of inter connected networks that help the sharing and manipulation of various kinds of data by following a set of protocols. Internet service providers help you get a connection to this wide network. Though internet has proven beneficial to us, it has its negative points. Let us explore them in detail.
“Right now, with social networks and other tools on the Internet, all of those 500 million people have a way to say what they’re thinking and have their voice be heard” says Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook.
Privacy: The problem today is that any information you share online is hardly private any longer, some of the sites you use regularly may monitor your behaviour so as to better understand how you behave and they could market this data to third parties as Facebook has done recently. And when it comes to your personal data, you never know if it will be kept private or if someone can hack into it. This is why it is important you take care not to upload important information but just the bare minimum as required.
Malware and other security threats: It is thanks to internet that various forms of online threats such as malware and other viruses managed to infect computers worldwide. These viruses can infect your system with the purpose of either hacking your data or cause your system to malfunction.
These are some of the positive and negative impacts of Internet. It is hard to imagine our world without it for we have become truly entwined with everything that the net has to offer us. What we can do is to offset some of the negatives and find a way to help mitigate the rest.
There’s no doubt that technology has changed our lives. Of course by now we thought we’d be living in a Jetsons fantasy with flying cars and robotic maids. But hey, we’re getting close with self-driving Teslas and Roombas. The invention of the internet was something we could have never expected, though. From being able to Google how to hard boil an egg (because, yeah, sometimes you have to Google simple things like that) to watching a YouTube video on how to change the battery in the fob of your car key, the internet has changed the way we live. But is that a good thing? With the good comes the bad, and unfortunately, the internet is a little bit of both.
Conclusion .
Nowadays, everyone uses the Internet and spends a lot of time on the Internet. I think nowadays everything can be found on the internet. If we search for something, we will get a lot of useful and unnecessary information. In my opinion, it would be appropriate if we get only the information we need for ourselves.
