Donald Sutherland shooting movie in Hamilton this week

It’s an eye-catching name for a film — The Love Child of Andy Warhol and Yoko Ono. 

 

And it has attracted an eye-catching international star. 

 

Canadian movie legend Donald Sutherland is in Hamilton this week shooting the  

feature film for Love Child Productions Inc. 

 

Sutherland is well-known for roles in iconic films such as MASH (1970), JFK (1991), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Klute (1971) and Ordinary People 

(1980). 

 

His current film is a comedy that centres on a recently paroled ex-con who re-enters society and finds himself at a crossroads: to fall back into 

a life of crime or try to forge a career in the “equally outrageous world” as a sculptor. 

 

Filming takes place this month and next month in Hamilton and Toronto. 

 

Joining the respected actor in the Love Child cast are son Rossif Sutherland and Rebecca Romijn (X-Men, Ugly Betty). Another Sutherland 

offspring — Kiefer — stars as super-agent Jack Bauer in the hit TV series 24. 

 

Jacqueline Norton, manager of the Hamilton Film and Television Office, said 2009 has seen a slow but steady stream of productions in the city 

so far. Last year, repercussions from the troubled economy and writer’s strike curtailed production province-wide. 

 

This year there is cause for optimism, thanks to the level of the Canadian dollar and the value of Ontario tax incentives in attracting 

productions. 

 

“We are getting some good-sized films and some good-sized stars, like Donald Sutherland,” Norton said. 

 

She said the Hamilton office is also stepping up its emphasis on local talent, whether in film production or other creative industries. 

 

The film office is part of the city’s economic development and real estate division.  

 

“So one of our goals has to be to build the creative economy. It’s very much about helping these small businesses grow.”
